Strong district
(Column ~ 03/17/03)
Dear Editor, I would like to respond to the Gazette's write-up and the comments made about the McCook school system in the letter-to-the-editor section last week. I do not want to bash McCook, I think that it is a good school system. I had commented both Tuesday and Thursday night that the reason why our committee did not pursue talking to McCook was because of a survey that was done in February 2001 that said around 90 percent of the patrons did not want to pursue this option...

It's a win-win
(Column ~ 03/17/03)
Dear Editor, Consolidating Republican Valley and Twin Valley Schools and building a new Junior-senior high school in Bartley would be a win-win situation. The combined annual budget for these two schools in 2001/2002 was $5.2 million. The budgets for 18 other Nebraska schools of comparable enrollment size as the RV/TV combined school range from $2.5 million to $4.4 million...

3 cents worth
(Column ~ 03/17/03)
Dear Editor, Does anyone have 3 cents to build a house? More or less, that is what Twin Valley and Republican Valley are asking for, to build a school. A school to house 6-12 grade students, offer them more programs in academics and sports. So where did I come up with 3 cents? It is very easy, if the TV/RV merger fails in a few years or less TV and RV are going to be looking at different schools. McCook's levy is at $1.23 and Cambridge's levy is also at $1.23...

I believe that this plan is our best option to accomplish these goals...

For or against, voting is vital
(Column ~ 03/17/03)
Remember the voter turnouts in Red Willow County in 2002? In both the primary and general elections, the number of votes cast were at or near historic low levels. Only 26 percent -- that's right, 26 percent -- of those registered voted in the May primary, and less than half -- 48 percent to be exact -- cast ballots in the November general election...

Vote for merger
(Column ~ 03/17/03)
Dear Editor, I was reading the little farm paper that came out with the Thursday, March 13 McCook Gazette. I noticed the article "Sutton man trades banking for farming." It is about the size of Bartley; it doesn't have a restaurant, but it does have a small grocery store...

Looming war, oppressive drought, struggling economy -- aren't there enough issues to worry about today? Yes there are, but let's add one concern we can do something about. Halo, moon
(Local News ~ 03/17/03)
The halo around the moon foretells rain -- the larger the halo, the nearer the rain clouds and the sooner the rain can be expected. Count the number of stars caught in the halo and they'll predict how many days the rain will fall. The U.S. War Department in 1883 wrote: "A large ring around the moon and low clouds indicate rain in 24 hours; a small ring and high clouds, rain in several days."...
