The Nebraska High School Basketball All-State Project - Saluting 1992

Could 1992 be called "The Year of the Shooter"? Five players made the All-Time Career Points list, several 3 point marks were set, and of course, Omaha Benson's Andre Woolridge scorched the nets for 50 points in the Bunnies 95-76 win over Hastings in the Class A championship game.

My friend Stu Pospisil longs for those days of 86-80 or 75-74 games. Where have all the shooters gone? Defense is cool alright, but a 36-29 boys game leaves you hungry for some lightning quick transition basketball.

And probably by far the biggest story/shock......the incredible Wahoo winning streak of 114 coming to an end in the Class B semifinals. When the score appeared on the board at Devaney it sounded like lightning struck the building, then the wonder if this was a cruel, early April Fools joke.

No joke, as the late Coach Mark Etzelmiller fashioned the perfect game plan that not only garnered the Indians a victory, but a convincing 84-68 one at that. Etz......one of a kind.

*The D-2 All-Tournament team consisted of seniors Allen Poppe (6-2) of CHB, Hildreth's 6-4 Terry Quadhamer and Tyler Steinke, Brady's 6-2 dandy . Juniors named to the squad were Adam Bratten of Brady (6-3) and Alan Pokorski of Prague (6-3). Quadhamer was a repeat selection.

*Adam Bratten won tournament scoring honors with his three game total of 75 (22, 27, 26). Teammate Tyler Steinke was runner-up with 63. Pokorski of Prague played only one game, but dropped in 32 in Prague's 4 point overtime loss to Brady.

St. Francis' only loss of the season came at the hands of C-1 Champion Battle Creek (74-77). I think we can forgive the Flyers for that one.

*The D-1 All-Tournament team; This team consisted of Wallace seniors Matt Hasenauer (5-10) and Chris Selp (6-4), plus Humphrey St. Francis 5-10 senior, Ted Hastreiter. Also named were St. Francis junior Kevin Torczon (5-10) and Adams sparkling sophomore, Chad Ideus (6-4). You can get used to hearing the name Chad Ideus the next two seasons in these blogs.

*Tournament scoring honors went to HSF senior leader Ted Hastreiter, who scored 66 points in three games (20, 24, 22). Only one point off was Chris Seip of Wallace, who scored 26 in the Wildcats 80-69 loss to HSF in the title game.

*The C-2 All-Tournament Team was made up of 3 seniors. They were Bertrand's 6-5 Tony Davis, Newman Grove's Don Guihard (5-10) and Augie Noyd (6-4) of Shelby. Junior Keith Krajewski of Bertrand (6-1) and sophomore John Piel (6-0) of Harvard also made the squad.

Tony Davis, with his 34 point outburst in the championship game, easily took tournament scoring honors with his three day total of 94, which included games of 32, 28, 34 points respectively.

Three Bertrand basketball players were also All-Staters in football for the Vikings 1991 state champion squad. They were running back Aaron Long, C-2 Offensive Player-of-the-Year, Jeff Vinzant, an all-state split end, and Mike Krajewski, an all-state defensive back.

Battle Creek's two regular season losses? An opening night loss to Wayne (58-75) and a mid-season loss to Pierce (54-55).

*The C-1 All-Tournament Team was made up of 2 seniors and 3 juniors. Tecumseh's Jeremy Doty (6-3) and 6-2 Chris Kissinger of Sandy Creek were the seniors. The junior stars were 6-5 Jay Korth of state champion Battle Creek, his classmate, 6-3 Chad Tegeler and 6-3 Chad Shalla of Grant.

The C-1 tournament scoring crown went to Doty of Tecumseh, who dropped in 22, 12 and 24 points respectively during the three day carnival. The biggest scoring outburst was a 39 point explosion by Shalla in Grant's 93-50 shellacking of West Holt in the opening round. The Grant junior however, was held to 7 points the next day by Tecumseh.

*The Class B All-Tournament Team was made up of all Seniors. Pius X landed both Darin Hansen (6-2) and Adam Treu (6-6) on the mythical team. Kent Koehn (6-2) and Chad Spady (6-5) of Ogallala were also named, as well as Schuyler's 6-5 Jeremy Kildare.

Tournament scoring honors went to Adam Treu of Lincoln Pius X, who had games of 26, 19 and 29 points to reach his 3 game total of 74 points. Chad Spady of Ogallala followed with 59, and amazingly, Schuyler sharpshooter Jeremy Kildare played only one game but drained 51 big ones in the Warriors 76-71 overtime loss to Lexington.

The Bunnies losses were to Omaha Gross (61-64), Papillion LV (48-62) and a District Final loss to Millard South (63-64). Yes, The Bunnies made it to the Big Dance with a Wild Card ticket.

*The All Class, All-Tournament Team: The All-Senior squad included Andre Woolridge-Omaha Benson (6-2), Doug Brandt-Hastings (6-10) and 6-5 Chris Dahl-Ralston from Class A, plus 6-5 Adam Treu of Pius X and Chad Spady (6-5) of Ogallala.

Andre Woolridge of Benson took Tournament scoring honors while cracking the century mark with his 102 point in three games. Woolridge was turned loose in the 4th quarter during the championship game with Hastings and set a Class A single game scoring record with his amazing 50 points.

The 51 points that Jeremy Kildare of Schuyler put up in the Lexington game established a Class B record for most points in a single game at the State Tournament.

Both records stand to this day.

**Andre Woolridge, who was given the nickname of "Silk" by his teammates, put on his 50 point show in front of Nebraska basketball coach Danny Nee and most of his future Husker teammates, who were also in attendance.

Andre needed at least 47 points to break the Class A career scoring record held by Bellevue West ace Erik Strickland (1,907). He also needed 46 to eclipse Kent Reckeway's single game record of 46.

Woolridge actually got off to a slow start on his record setting performance, scoring only 7 points in the first quarter. He had 19 points at halftime and 31 after three stanzas.

With his team in control, Benson skipper Terry Shelsta turned Woolridge loose in the 4th quarter. His 19 fourth quarter points included a spectacular reverse jam on a transition play. I still recall that dunk, because I was standing to the left of the basket on the floor and probably should not have been there. Just passing through, you see.

Woolridge ended his career with 1,911 points, 38th on the Career scoring list. That 50 points incidentally, set a Devaney Sports Center record for most points by anyone in a game played there.

*Adam Treu hung up the basketball shoes and went on to walk on at Nebraska where he played left tackle and was the long snapper for the Huskers 1994 and 1995 National Championship teams. Adam was drafted in the 3rd Round of the NFL Draft (72nd) by the Oakland Raiders. Treu was the backup Center for 7 years behind starter Barret Robbins. When Robbins was injured during the 2001 NFL season, Adam started 14 games and did very well.

Despite Treu's success in 2001, Robbins regained his starting spot the next season, right up to the day before Super Bowl XXXVII. Robbins was reported missing, then later found in a sorry state. Treu started Super Bowl XXXVII in his place, but the Raiders lost that game to Tampa Bay.

Robbins was later released after testing positive for steroids in 2003.

Adam went on to start 16 games in 2004, then 10 in 2005. After suffering a ruptured quadriceps in 2007, Treu retired in 2007 after 10 seasons in the NFL.

*Andre Woolridge lasted only one year at Nebraska playing for Danny Nee as part of a vaunted recruiting class that included Erick Strickland and Jaron Boone. Andre transferred to Iowa, sat out a season, then went on to make 1st Team All-Big Ten his junior season under head coach Tom Davis. His senior year, Woolridge became the first player ever to lead the Big Ten in both scoring and assists, plus another All-Big Ten honor.

Woolridge was not drafted in the 1997 NBA draft, so instead opted to play professionally overseas for the next 12 years, competing in Turkey, Italy, France, Germany and Israel. He retired from pro basketball in 2009 and settled in Sacramento, California where he created a basketball academy called All World Ballin'.

*Erick Strickland played all of his college basketball for the Huskers but ended up undrafted in the 1996 NBA draft. Seemingly unphased by the disappointment, Strickland made the Dallas Mavericks as a free agent and spent 4 seasons there, averaging a career high 12.8 ppg during the 1999/2000 season. He later played for the New York Knicks, Vancouver Grizzlies, Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers and finally the Milwaukee Bucks, averaging 9 points an outing throughout his 9 year career in the NBA.

*Doug Brandt went on to play basketball at Baylor, where he was a three-time Academic All-American majoring in pre-med. All the while, Doug started 108 of the 109 games he played for Baylor, and was still ranked 6th on the all-time rebounding list and 7th in scoring at last check. Albeit in 2007 when I checked, that is still impressive for the simple reason the dude was a great player and a terrific student athlete as well.

Doug Brandt then spent some time in the Continental Basketball Association and followed with stints in the French and Italian Leagues. I'm not certain, but Dr. Douglas Brandt may be practicing Radiology in Kingman, Arizona at the current time.
