ABC saying goodbye to pair of long-running soaps
(Column ~ 04/20/11)
ABC announced the cancellation of two of their three daytime serials last week. "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" will be off the schedule in September 2011 and Jaunary 2012, respectively, while "General Hospital" is safe (at least for now). The news of the cancellations didn't necessarily surprise me as they'd been rumored for several months before the official announcement, but it did disappoint me a little bit. ...

Preservation effort
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/20/11)
To people interested in history, at the current time the McCook Army Air Base apron is being destroyed. If you learned to drive on the air base concrete runways, taxiways and apron, this part of your history will soon be gone forever. The place where your father or grandfather began his training to serve his country will no longer be part of McCook history...

Bond Q's and A's
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/20/11)
Hitchcock County Schools Proposed Bond There is some misinformation concerning the bond issue that is floating around that needs to be brought to the attention of the voters of Hitchcock County: 1. "If this bond fails the board automatically will rerun another bond to put everything in Culbertson." I believe we have put forth the best option and we have been guided by the majority of the people. ...

School concerns
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/20/11)
We are writing out of concern for our schools and the upcoming bond issue. We have been longtime members of the Culbertson community and I taught in Culbertson for many years. We would encourage everyone to get out and vote on this issue. Our point of view is that we do need to vote FOR the bond issue which would add to some of the facilities we already have at both the Culbertson and Trenton sites. ...

(Column ~ 04/20/11)
Although I generally enjoy traveling I don't travel often. But in October of 2002 Danny and I had the opportunity to travel to North Dakota. Patrick and his growing family had recently moved there. They were lonesome for familiar faces and so made us very welcome. Nevertheless, not wanting to over-crowd the nearly newlyweds, we checked into a motel room for our stay, a family-owned place just off the highway...

No matter the source, sugar is bad in excess
(Editorial ~ 04/20/11)
A recent article in the New York Times Magazine may be a little alarmist, but it at least brings some balance to the argument over high-fructose corn syrup. The "conventional" sugar industry -- sugar made from beets and cane -- has been enjoying a rebound at the expense of high-fructose corn syrup, a lower-cost sweetener that has found its way into all manner of soft drinks and foods over the last few decades...
