Tax refund lawsuit is dismissed
(Local News ~ 04/01/10)
The latest attempt to return unconstitutional property taxes collected three years ago under the water law LB 701 has sunk. Red Willow County District Court Judge David Urbom has dismissed a case brought by the three natural resources districts in the Republican River Basin. ...

Still no refund on illegal NRD property taxes
(Editorial ~ 04/01/10)
Don't look for any tax refunds from the Natural Resources Districts any time soon. The Legislature, so far, has failed to pass a law that allows the NRDs to return some $2.5 million in property taxes collected in 2007 under a law, later ruled unconstitutional, to raise money to buy water and take other steps to send enough water down the Republican River to fend off Kansas' lawyers...

Lions, lambs and astronomy
(Column ~ 04/01/10)
Well, let's see, March came in like a lion (remember the snow?), now will it go out like a lamb? That old weather saying has a foundation in astronomy. On March 1 of each year Leo, the Lion is just above the eastern horizon, just coming "in" to the celestial picture. Just above the western horizon is Aries, the Ram, who is exiting, or going "out" of the sky for a while...

Hope they reconsider
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/01/10)
I read Monday's Gazette regarding Hillcrest and the pharmacy issue with great interest. I found it interesting to note that Hillcrest alleges that the local pharmacies have had 50 deficiencies in three months including "late deliveries." Perhaps it would be interesting to know the true nature of those allegations. I wonder why Hillcrest feels that if they go with an Omaha supplier that all these deliveries will now suddenly arrive on time?...

Think it won't work
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/01/10)
With regard to the opinion article, "Think it will work," March 29, 2010, all I can say is "Woe, Woe is me!" Another liberal Democrat has taken up his pen to criticize a local conservative who dared to suggest that the White House has been taken over by Nazis and / or communists. The author then follows with "I feel for someone who has so much hatred in their hearts ... I'll bet she considers herself a real Christian."...

Another eyesore
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/01/10)
Last week in the paper there was a list of houses that are to be demolished. The old motel on South Street and Highway 83 was not on the list. This motel is a disgusting ugly eyesore. Tourists and visitors coming into or out of McCook see the ugly site. For the City of McCook, that is promoted for tourism, the old motel is not a pretty sight...

Gun rights issues a high priority
(Column ~ 04/01/10)
Protecting and maintaining our constitutional right to keep and bear arms for security and defense is fundamental to a free society. Improving and ensuring unified implementation and enforcement throughout the state regarding Nebraska's Concealed Handgun Permit Act, and other gun rights issues, have been high priority while I have been in the Legislature...

Trade agreements must see the light of day
(Column ~ 04/01/10)
With all the talk of jobs and stimulus bills coming out of Washington D.C., I have remained surprised an important part of our economy seems to have reached a frustrating stalemate. International sales are a boon to our economy. As the leader of the free world, the U.S. also is one of the largest trading nations, supporting millions of American jobs...
