Region should be grateful to Don Blank
(Editorial ~ 01/30/04)
Involvement in government is important, but never more so than when push comes to shove. Western Nebraska has a tendency to feel slighted by the east, justified or not, but when budgets get tight, it's important that regional representatives be in place to protect the interests of their constituents...

Read it again
(Letter to the Editor ~ 01/30/04)

Thanks, officer
(Letter to the Editor ~ 01/30/04)
**Dear Editor, I want to express my appreciation to the Nebraska patrol officer who stopped me on the road to the cemetery last Saturday evening about 9 p.m. I was coming to town after visiting the cemetery grave of my wife. He had seen me drive around out there after dark and was checking to see if everything was OK. He said there had been vandalism in the area. He was just on the lookout. I did not get his name, but certainly appreciate his watching out...

Keep doors open to help end suspicion
(Editorial ~ 01/30/04)
With the mistrust and accusations flying around McCook over the city's ongoing water problems, maybe it's time to give the community a reason to trust its leaders. A document submitted by the Environmental Remediation Branch of the Department of the Army Corp of Engineers shows that there is no evidence that the old McCook Army Air Base site is contaminated by chemical warfare material -- one of the primary reasons a well site was never developed on the property...

Fire, heroism and competition
(Column ~ 01/30/04)
Fire was a constant threat in 1902 ... you heated with wood and coal stoves and the fire department had to come from C Street to wherever you were located ... after they got to the station and hitched up the horses. The fire station was on the east side of the alley, where the back end of the old First National Bank sits. I found three fires around Christmas time in the McCook Tribune ... not one Christmas related...

The water that comes out of my pipes is cloudy, smelly, and doesn't taste very good and, of course, we continue to hear similar complaints from people all around our fair city. ...
