Officials tour new Kiplinger Arena
(Local News ~ 03/05/03)
Red Willow County's weed department director told commissioners Tuesday he won't be picky about a new pickup. "I just want something I don't have to push down hill to start," Bill Elliott laughed as he and commissioners discussed purchasing a new pickup for the weed and hazardous waste collection programs...

State economics
(Column ~ 03/05/03)
Dear Editor, Some area citizens have been getting all worked up over the possible closing of our prison camp. From an economic standpoint, the center contributes to help balance the state budget (which as we all know is in terrible shape). The center generates huge amounts of new and surplus capital, which in turn goes back to the state, which invests this money in educational systems, the lottery system, etc...

Gym not needed
(Column ~ 03/05/03)
Dear Editor, I was at the meeting last night on the merger of Twin Valley. They had blueprints of the new school that they propose to build. There was a school teacher there who voiced her opinion, and I value it very much. She was concerned how the location of the classrooms for the sixth graders and the high schooler, well from what I could see, there are not enough classrooms for the future...

(Column ~ 03/05/03)
When you step inside the Kiplinger Arena at the Red Willow County Fairgrounds, you will be amazed by the vast amount of space which stretches out before your eyes. It is an awesome sight to behold. As members of the fair board saw for themselves Tuesday afternoon, an overwhelming array of 42,000 square feet is contained under the largest single-span roof in the McCook area...

Shadows of war
(Column ~ 03/05/03)
Dear Editor, Great nations are like big brothers, they feel the need to protect, defend and guide the poor nations of the world. Many countries depend on the United States for economic aid and generally receive billions of American dollars in aid for what? To be our friends? Or maybe so they would be more likely to trade with our country in goods. How much do we receive in return for our good gestures? Fact is very little in comparison, or none, in most cases...

LB754 bus ride
(Column ~ 03/05/03)
Dear Editor, (It was) a full day from Hayes Center to the state Capitol and back. A few stops, and there were 14 people all total. Zoning administrators from several counties were among those on the bus planning to give testimony. Practicing speeches were part of the fun. Then, word was received that testimonies would be limited to 5 minutes...

Sales tax fair
(Column ~ 03/05/03)
Dear Editor, To start, I would like to say that I, as a McCook city resident and home owner, do think it's fair to send the air base judgment to the home owners only. I believe it would be fair to induce a sales tax for the fact that when non city home owners go shopping they would be helping to pay for the water problem also. ...

The fortunes of war
(Column ~ 03/05/03)
These are perilous times. We have a despot in power in a land far from home, with an avowed hatred of all things American. Weapons of mass destruction are under his control. There are those who say he will not hesitate to use them, against his own people, his neighbors, and even the faraway United States. Unimaginable suffering and desolation may yet be unleashed upon the world, by his command...
