11-Man Running Backs to Watch in 2010 - Part One
We previously spotlighted the returning 1000 Yard Rushers for 2010, now let's have a look at the other runners who are expected to make an impact this Fall. Today we will spotlight the 11-Man RB's you will be reading about in 2010.
*Zach Shafer-Ralston -- Never received a mention before the season started in '09 and rushed for over 5 yards a pop and 800+. He'll have some hogs to move 'em out in 2010.
*Josh Swanson Gering -- Tough kid who ran for 899 last season. Look for much of the same in '10.
* Aaron Lier-Omaha Gross -- Oh my gosh, what a defensive player along with a bruising FB. Rushed for 401 last year and will get more chances this Fall despite the promising Luke Cunningham and CJ Zimmerer's little brother in the backfield.
*Josh Papa-Schuyler -- All he had to do was hand the ball off to Kyle Emanuel last season (not hardly), but this year he just may be a 1000 yard rushing QB. Schuyler returns a ton of Seniors and Papa will have a line to give him some daylight. Ran for 417 in '09. Slickster.
*Tyson Broekemeier-Aurora-Ran for 670, passed for 1,752 to lead the Huskies to their 2nd straight State Championship. This kid is so slick and quick, he fooled me twice last year on a fake handoffs. Difference maker when it counts. Any coach in the State would kill for this kid....and he is F A S T to top it all off.
*Tannor Mroczek-Gothenburg -- Like :10.7 and :22.1 speed? This will be the year Mroczek will put his speed/vision/ and cutback ability together for a huge rushing total if his line comes through....trust me on this one.
*Greg Millikan-Wahoo -- With 829 yards a year ago and lots of veterans back, Millikan is poised for a 1400+ rushing campaign.
*Nathan Scott -- Broken Bow -- This QB ran for 955, passed for 1055 and was a demon on defense and a thief to boot. One of the very best athletes in Class C-1 football. People with short memories will not recall this team darn near stopped St. Cecilia from getting to Lincoln in that 12-14 Semifinal loss. Bluehawks were lucky to escape that day.
* Seth Wardyn and Caleb Kluender-GICC -- Wardyn is set for a thousand yard season and Valentine transfer Kluender ran for 669 and passed for 905 last season. This duo will be a 2-headed monster for defenses on what appears to be a friendly Crusader 2010 slate.
*Shane Meyers-Ashland-Greenwood -- Who boy, what a rough/tough lad this guy is. Rushed for 750 yards a year ago and has lots of teammates returning in his Senior class.
*Sam Hillman-Syracuse -- Missed all 2009 with an injury, but is set to make a splash in 2010. Syracuse kids are real tough and Hillman fit's the mold like a Tee. Coach Rick Nordhues is one of the best around and knows how to preach and teach good football skills.
*Tanner Zlab-Wilber-Clatonia -- Now you see him/now you don't. This Junior was a speed burner as a 10th grader and sprinted for 990 yards in 173 carries and 10 scores. He hit that 1000 yard mark and then some this Fall.
*Ryen Miller-Ravenna -- Finally, it's Miller's turn to carry the rushing load. Last 2 seasons it been outstanding Josh Crowell, but in 2010 the yards-after-contact specialist will get that 1000 Yards. Coach Hud is just a gem up there in Bluejay land. Love that guy.
*Michael Enstrom-Oakland-Craig -- Well now, talk about bloodlines. Enstrom escaped for 852 yards as a Sophomore last season and OC has lots of blocking this time around too. You'll be hearing about this player a bunch in the next two seasons
*Riley Gross and Christian Victor-Fremont Bergan -- Gross has started at Quarterback since his Sophomore season when he when he weighed 130 pounds....both ways! A solid, trusted hitter on defense, he ran for 818 yards 2 years ago and 704 in 2009. Never mind he is a 2 time 1000 yard passer....WOW. Victor is a 200 pounder that went out after a few games and 471 yards in 2009. He is very quick for his size and a meanie at LB.
*Will McCawley and Seth Hoffman -Aquinas -- McCawley is the man that runs Ronnie Mimick's Wing-T show and will run for some yards this year despite a returning 1000 yard man (Nate Roh) in the backfield. Hoffman, only the 4th Freshman to rush for over a 1000 yards (1,147) has decided to transfer from Shelby to Aquinas and will try the FB for now. We'll keep you posted on that one.
*Nate Jones-Yutan -- Ran for 704 as a junior.
*Micah Fullner-Wisner-Pilger -- WP makes the drop to C-2 this season and Fullner is a rugged 2-way star who carried the pig 181 times for 732 in 2009. Can you say a thousand for 2010?
*Adam Neels-Elmwood-Murdock -- May not hit a grand because EM is always so balanced, but could better the 740 he had last season.
*Talon Matzner-Tri-County -- His blinding speed makes him a threat in so many ways.
*Cody Jackson-Hastings St. Cecilia -- Well, Carl Tesmer's troops drop to C-2, and St. C's usually has a 1000 yard runner......looks like the speedy "Action Jackson could be Da Man. Wonder why that Blake Micek kid that is a super sprinter for the 'Hawks doesn't play FB? Suit him up boys!
*Clayton Moore-Friend -- Steady as can be with 759 yards last season and not much help. Maybe he can close in on that 1000 yard mark this Fall.
*Hayden Farnstrom-Thayer Central -- This school is a 1000 yard rusher factory. Farnstrom had 868 last year.
I'm retalively certain that I'm not hitting every back there is to watch by any stretch of the imagination, but I do not have the luxury of prospectus sheets from coaches like the World-Herald, Journal-Star, and Huskerland Preps do. This is all from detailed stat keeping and seeing a gazillion games every season............isn't it great to eat, sleep and live high school football?
Next we will shed some light on the 8-Man and 6-Man ranks. 29 days and counting my friends!
