Mazour dazzles, leads Boone Central/Newman Grove to C-1 Title.
Posted Tuesday, November 25, at 6:47 PM
Well, the Arnie Johnson Farewell Train has completed it's journey, and in rousing style. Coaching the final game of his career, Johnson's Cardinals turned the magical talents of Wyatt Mazour loose against Ashland-Greenwood and the result was a resounding 54-14 win and a C-1 title. The amazing Mazour rushed for 254 yards and 2 touchdowns, completed 10 of 14 passes for a score, returned a punt 83 yards for another TD and accounted for 384 yards of all purpose yardage in the victory...

Aquinas efficiency smothers Cedar Catholic, 40-6.
Posted Tuesday, November 25, at 2:08 PM

It happened during halftime outside Duncan Field during the Monarch's quarterfinal game against Hastings St. Cecilia. I could not make out the words, but the tone of Aquinas had coach Ron Mimick was stern and filled with words that meant business. Not often have I heard good friend Ron Mimick speak in this tone, but what transpired in that second half in Hastings took hold and never let up...

Hemingford dominates BDS to take D-1 title, 52-8.
Posted Monday, November 24, at 6:40 PM

Like a raging whirlwind from the far reaches of the Western Nebraska Panhandle, the Hemingford Bobcats raced to their 1st state football title in the school's history on a brutally cold and windy afternoon at Memorial Stadium. In a start-to-finish domination of a very good Bruning-Davenport-Shickley squad, the Bobcats never permitted the Eagle offense to get started. And on offense, RB Ethan Skinner and FB Brady Turek were nearly impossible to stop...

Exeter-Milligan nabs another 8-Man football title.
Posted Monday, November 24, at 2:32 PM

A spectacular 23 touchdown reception by Derek Luzum with 8 seconds left in the half, plus some nifty halftime adjustments by Coach Dean Filipi paved the way for a 40-26 win over Anselmo-Merna in the D-2 State Championship game. In a game blistered by sustained, swirling winds of over 30 mph, defense and the running game took center stage...

Boone Central/NG defense, special teams play spark 34-7 win over Kearney Catholic
Posted Saturday, November 15, at 1:36 AM

In a semi final match-up between two potent defenses something has to give. On a night that saw 15 total tackles for losses that limited both offenses, it was the defense and special teams that came through for Boone Central/NG. First, it was a 42 yard pick-six by senior linebacker Travis Kennedy 3 minutes before halftime, then an electrifying 89 yard kick return by Wyatt Mazour to begin the 2nd half of play that set things in motion for Boone and led to a 34-7 victory over Kearney Catholic...

Elm Creek's Christian Best overcame a leg injury to rush for 189 yards and a touchdown in the win. The stout Buffalo "D" held the high powered Creighton offense to 250 yards in the game and advanced to the semis to face unbeaten Hemingford in a Monday road match-up...

A Dive into the 8-Man Quarterfinals, Aquinas football and things larger than football.
Posted Monday, November 10, at 1:07 AM

Due to time constraints, I did not get a chance to expound on the Aquinas-St. Cecilia game but the chance to say a few things about the Monarchs from Aquinas Catholic cannot be passed up. Head coach Ron Mimick is not keen on writers singling out individual players. A kind of " NO "I" in team" type of deal. I understand. That's probably what makes this program so successful. You can see it, feel it, and grasp it every single time you are on their sideline...

Aquinas dominates second half enroute to 21-10 win over Hastings St. Cecilia
Posted Saturday, November 8, at 1:19 AM

Once again executing the defensive coaching skills of Tony Smith and the offensive genius of Ron Mimick, Aquinas rode a dominating 2nd half of windy football to a 21-10 Class C-2 quarterfinal win over a very good Hastings St. Cecilia football team. Limiting the potent Bluehawk offensive attack to just 172 yards of total offense for the game, only 54 in the second half, gave the Monarchs a chance to play the type of ball control football that has carried them to 13 straight playoff appearances, including 2 state titles and 1 state runner-up the past 3 years.. ...

Ashland-Greenwood rides the wind, stifling defense to 37-7 win over GICC.
Posted Saturday, November 8, at 12:30 AM

Oh, that old devil wind. Sometimes it can be your worst enemy, other times your best friend. On a windswept, warm afternoon in Grand Island, Ashland-Greenwood turned a wind-aided 2nd quarter into 24 points and never looked in the rear view mirror for a convincing 37-7 win over Grand Island Central Catholic...

Fullerton guts it out with 40-39 playoff win over Amherst.
Posted Thursday, November 6, at 2:03 AM

The undefeated Fullerton Warriors had to do something Wednesday night they haven't had to do all season. Play without all-state, 2,015 yard rusher Garrett Sonderup with the game on the line. The Warriors dug deep to pirate 3 Trey Taubenheim passes in the final 4:58 seconds of the game to hold off the hard charging Broncos...

Workman leads Beatrice to wild playoff payback win.
Posted Monday, November 3, at 12:35 AM

One year ago in the Orangemen's 1st round playoff game against Elkhorn South, RB Jessup Workman carried the ball 43 times for 219 yards and 5 touchdowns. Beatrice lost that 2 overtime battle 38-37 and packed in the football gear for the season. But Friday night under the bright lights of Elkhorn Public Stadium, the 6-1, 200 senior had 5 less carries, scored 2 less touchdowns, but gained 21 more yards and led his team to a wild and woolly 42-35 win over that same Elkhorn South team. ...

Elkhorn wins classic, hard-nosed playoff game with late field goal.
Posted Saturday, November 1, at 11:34 PM

In a bone crunching battle of defensive wills that refused to fold, it came down to Elkhorn Antler kicker Kyle Hill. With nerves of steel and only 4 seconds remaining in the game, 185 pound senior lined up and calmly repeated the same thing he did to start the game....kick a field goal. But instead of giving the Antlers a 3-0 lead, Hill's 20 yard beauty gave Elkhorn a gut wrenching 1st round playoff victory over an awful good York football team...
