This Week's Prep Football Notables
***Special 1000 Yard Alert*** - Jacob Morril-Creighton - The talented junior eclipsed the 1000 yard rushing for the THIRD straight season last Friday night against Neligh-Oakdale. Morrill currently has 1,007 for the season in 6 games. Jacob is in august company, being one of only five freshman in Nebraska high school football history that have ever rushed for a 1000 yards in a season. He has 3,455 yards in his illustrious career. Props!
*Luke McNitt-Kearney - Powerful Bearcat QB wreaked havoc on Lincoln North Star, running for 168-29 carries and completing 9 of 12 passes for 106 yards. McNitt scored on short runs of 1 and 2 yards, increasing his rushing total for the season to 745 yards. Bearcats clawed the Gators 36-21.
*Austin Rose-Lincoln North Star - "Energy Bunny" type RB ran for 114-21 carries and scored on a 23 yard run in the loss to Kearney. The hard rambling junior now has 995 yards for the year.
*Braden Knuth-Grand Island - Stepped up big time for the Islanders when Andrew Rojas was injured. Knuth sprinted for 150 yards on 24 carries, helping the Islanders to a 28-10 over the North Platte Platters.....hows that for turning the time clock back for a nickname?
*Tanner Mazour-Boone Central/Newman Grove - Marvelous quarterback is loving his new offensive set this year. Coach Arnie Johnson dumped the slow developing double wing-formation for the standard "I" set and Mazour is taking full advatage. He was instrumental in leading the Cardinals to a huge 35-7 win over Columbus Lakeview last week. Mazour ran for 178-18 carries and scored on TD runs of 34, 1, and 45 yards. This kid is really good, folks.......and so is his line.
*Eric Buller and Evan Neville-York - Twosome accounted for nearly 300 yards on the ground in the Dukes 21-10 win over GINW. Buller did most of the damage by rushing for 179-15 totes. He broke loose on an 80 yard run in the contest. The speedy Neville ran for 109-17 carries and scored the other 2 TDs on runs of 48 and 3 yards.
*Kyle Bockmann-GINW - The Northwest offense may have been sleepy, but Bockmann continued his hard running. The 180 senior had 154 yards on 18 carries and scored the Vikings only touchdown on a 6 yard run.
*Jake Fowler-Adams Central - The 2011 all-state Class B RB made shambles of GICC's defense by rushing for 282 yards on 38 carries, shedding tackler after tackler. Fowler scored on runs of 12 and 5 yards in the Patriots 36-6 win.
*Isaac Aakre-Millard North - Tell me this guy isn't the best running back in the state.....and he doesn't even play the position. Aakre bolted for 251-36 carries and scored twice on 1 yard plunges in Millard North's 34-10 win over a very good Omaha Westside team. Aakre missed a game this fall due to a concussion and still has 1,338 rushing yards.
*Connor Matthews-Millard North - Ran for 131-17 carries and scored on a 20 yard run to aid Aakre's effort. Matthews increased his season total to 879 yards. The Mustang defense held Class A's leading rusher, Lane Yates to 14 yards on 10 carries in the game. And when Aakre was asked about that after the game, he downplayed the fact. Class, pure class Isaac. Great kid.
***1000 Yard Alert*** Matt Klein-Scottsbluff - Klein has been on this list every week and there is a reason for that. Last week he rushed for a season high 227 yards, running for Tds of 59 and 85 yards. Klein also returned a punt 48 yards for a score as the Bearcats beat rival Alliance 49-33.
Mitch Pancost-Alliance - Small, but quick back rushed for 128-28 carries and scored on an 7 yard run and an 80 yard pass reception for a score in the loss. Pancost, a 1000 yard rusher a season ago, now has 870 yards after 7 games in 2012.
***Record Setting Alert*** Jackie Davis-Omaha Central - Shifty runner, cut out of the "I-Back High" mold, tied a Class A record by running for 6 touchdowns against Omaha Northwest. Davis rambled for 312 yards in the win and scored on runs of 11, 3, 15, 10, 50, and 18 yards. Davis has rushed for 1,121 yards in 2012. He ran for 1,481 a year ago for the Eagles.
***1000 Yard Alert*** Calvin Strong-Omaha North - Sophomore needed only 14 carries to run for 157 yards in the Vikings 56-31 win over Bellevue West. Strong scored on 16 and 31 yard runs. He now has 1,067 for the year.
*Jessop Workman-Beatrice - Workman, another sophomore, blasted for 149 yards and scored twice on 5 yard runs in the Orangemens 44-21 win against Seward.
*Josh Schollmeyer-Arlington - Doesn't seem to matter to Schollmeyer who he plays against.....he gains lots of yards. In a 45-33 loss to Boys Town, Shollmeyer rushed for 212 yards on 41 carries and scored on 1 and 4 yard runs. Josh now has 1,322 yards for the season. Man, C-1 has some killer running backs!
*K Z Williams-Boys Town - Scoted for 209 yards in the Cowboys win and scored on 46, 1, and 56 yards runs.
*Austin Havlena-David City - Does this guy ever slow down? Last Friday Havlena tore up Wayne with 255-36 carries in the Scouts 36-0 win. Havlena ran for scores from 9 and 27 yards out. David City is on the playoff bubble, so I really hope the Scouts can get in to give this exiting runner more chances to carry the pig before he calls it a career at David. Havlena is at 1,255 yards after 7 games.
*Dalton Daeges-Pinkerton-Omaha Christian Academy - Ran for 203 yards on 36 carries for the Eagles but 4 turnovers were too much for OCA in a 26-24 loss to Clarkson-Leigh. Pinkerton has 803 for the season.
*Tyler Schnitzler-Kenesaw - Senior QB rushed for an amazing 300 yards on 30 carries against powerful, unbeaten Shelton, leading his Blue Devils to an exiting 25-20 win. Schnitzler scored on runs of 53, 65, 38 and 3 yards and added 95 yards passing, completing 5 of 10 throws. Tyler now has 996 yards in 2012. Freshman brother Preston added 105-20 carries and is now at 740 yards for the sesason. Very rare a freshman rushes for a grand in a season.
*Luke Glenn-Shelton - The 'Dogs may have come out on the short end of the score, but Glenn was spectactular, running for 174-31 tries in the loss. Luke Glenn has notched his THIRD 1000 yard season and stands at 1,228 for 2012.
***400 yard passing Alert*** Jake Findley-Giltner - Senior QB threw for 402 yards in a 64-25 win at Spalding/Spalding Academy. Jake completed 32 of 45 passes and is now 128 of 182 for 2,072 yards and 33 touchdowns. Yes, THIRTY THREE. That's 70% competiton, sports fans.
Jake Slough-Doniphan-Trumbull - Saw this guy up close last Friday as he ripped through the mighty St. Cecilia defense for 268 yards on 35 carries with a seperated shoulder. Slough broke the school rushing record in the 38-21 win and now has 1,345 yards. A deep playoff run for the Cardinals could see the junior flirting with the 2000 yard mark. No secret here....I REALLY like this RB.
*Nate Hayes - Osceola - One of the better all-around athletes to come out of Osceola in a while, Hayes ran for 308 big ones on 30 carries in a 72-50 shelling of Hampton. Hayes ran for six touchdowns in the win.
*Eli Van Matre-Gibbon - Continued to chase his Uncle Luke's rushing record (1,357-1978) by rambling for 182 yards in the Buffaloes 21-0 shutout over Fillmore Central. Eli is at 1,259 for the season going into Friday's game with 2-5 Central City.
*Tyson Howard-Ansley-Litchfield - 240 pound QB/RB ran for 201 yards and 3 scores and passed for 217 yards and 3 Tds in a 50-43 win against Twin Loup.
*Tyler Viers-Twin Loup-Countered with 143-33 touches in the loss. The tough rodeo cowboy now has 1,209 yards for the year.
*Logan Lewis-Sidney - 175 pound junior rushed for a giant 257 yards on 25 carries as the Red Raiders beat Gering for their 1st win of 2012. Gering's Gage Smith rushed for 151-26 in the loss. Lewis now has 809 yards rushing for the season. By the way, Sidney has never had a 1000 yard rusher. They close the season with Scottsbluff. Wish I hadn't said that.
*James Kruger-Norris - Three year 1000 yard man rushed for 175-25 carries and ran for Tds of 43 and 19 yards in the Titans 43-19 win over Crete. Kruger, one of the state's best running backs, has rushed for 1,423 yards in 8 games. This guys is so good.
*Cord Huettner-Falls City - Rushed for 197 yards in the Tigers 35-0 win over Auburn. The game was called with 1:40 in the 3rd quarter due to threatning weather. My goodness, how many yards would Huettner have rushed for if the game went the full 48 minutes?
***1000 Yard Alert*** James Kann-Ft. Calhoun - Quarterback rushed for 172-18 carries in a 25-7 win against DC West. Kann surpassed the 1000 yard plateau by 2 yards in the win.
*Jacob Huss and Nick Pandorf-Columbus Scotus - 100 yard rushing twins as of late for the 'Rocks. Huss bolted for 166-19 tries and Pandorf ran for 151-22 carries and scored from 13, 11, 4, and 34 yards out in a 35-20 win over Madison. Huss now has 750 for the year, while Pandorf is at 783.
*Jacob Gauderault-Madison - Matched strides with the 100 yard twins by running for 173-32 carries in the loss. Gauderault is now only 19 yards away from the coveted 1000 yard mark.
*Trent Geiser-Anselmo-Merna - Sophomore rushed for 205 yards and hit the house from 40, 31 and 10 yards out in a 64-6 trouncing of Loomis. Geiser ran for 740 yards as a freshman and is one shifty dude. Lord in heaven, A-M has has had some great running backs through the years!
*Joel Weidel-Fremont Bergan - Nearly outgained the entire North Bend team in the Knights 40-8 win. Weidel sprinted for 153 yards........North Bend has 156 total yards in the game.
