How to help finance the buildup in Afghanistan
(Column ~ 12/14/09)
As the war in Afghanistan escalates some have suggested increasing taxes, which I think is a bad idea especially at a time when many Americans are still struggling with the economy. We need to get our fiscal house in order, and be honest about the costs of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. ...

Holiday season trying time for military families
(Editorial ~ 12/14/09)
I'll be home for Christmas You can count on me. Please have snow, and mistletoe And presents on the tree. Christmas eve will find me Where the love light gleams I'll be home for Christmas If only in my dreams The haunting, melancholy Christmas song written by Buck Ram, Kim Gannon and Walter Kent, and popularized by Bing Crosby in 1943, when the outcome of World War II was far from assured, hearkens back to the vain hope of World War I doughboys who thought the "war to end all wars" would be over quickly.. ...

Yes, Virginia
(Letter to the Editor ~ 12/14/09)
Yes, Virginia, there is a Scrooge -- he is here in McCook, evicting people from their homes in the middle of winter and so close to the holidays. What a shame. It doesn't make sense the commissioners buying up that property as other places sit empty, like West Ward...

Yes, Virginia II
(Letter to the Editor ~ 12/14/09)
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He's known as the U.S. Government and in the finest Robin Hood tradition, takes from the future to give to the present. Your little friends have been affected by the skepticism of our skeptical age. They do not believe except what they see. ...

What's confusing?
(Letter to the Editor ~ 12/14/09)
The rules of the U.S. Senate are not confusing, it is the bills our elected officials write that confuse the people. They do not read them when they are finished. They ignore all the letters and calls against the bills. Please concentrate on the cost of health care and fix that, without gutting the whole, entire system...

Bait and switch?
(Letter to the Editor ~ 12/14/09)
Sen. Nelson's attack dog, Mr. Fagin, is correct; it will take 60 votes to end debate on the healthcare reform bill now being debated in the Senate. Let me say that again, "it will take 60 votes to end debate on this bill -- not pass it, just end debate."...

Hillcrest resident, 99, stays involved with current events
(Features ~ 12/14/09)
Some people become apathetic to the ways of the world as they get older. Not 99-year-old Esther Wissbaum of McCook. Wissbaum keeps busy on her 1977 manual Smith Corona typewriter, pounding out letters to newspapers about a variety of issues, such as the decline of common courtesy ("What's wrong with saying 'You're welcome?'" "Nowadays people say 'No problem.' What does that mean, exactly?'") to legalizing industrial hemp...
