A handful of observations
(Column ~ 04/10/08)
My pen was busy recording the this and the that of our unexpected trip to Denver last month. Wisdom was there, change was the one constant and the other-worldiness of hospitals remains intact. We were at Mom's installing a baby gate in one of the kitchen doorways. ...

A mudslide of liquified cow manure oozed out of a field irrigated by a McCook dairy into a neighbor's pasture northeast of McCook Tuesday, and the neighbor demands answers and action -- now. "The whole damned yard was full of sh--," said Andy O'Dea, who owns property south of the corn stubble and wheat field onto which Red Willow Dairy sprays liquified cow manure pumped from the waste collection lagoons at the dairy...

Christensen: Flouride just another unfunded mandate
(Local News ~ 04/10/08)
A pending bill that would require fluoridation of city drinking water supplies is just another unfunded mandate that local taxpayers don't need, Sen. Mark Christensen told McCook Area Chamber of Commerce members on his weekly conference call today. The bill, that advanced to select file Tuesday by 29 to 4, would require the fluoridation of the drinking water supply of any city or village with a population of 1,000 people or more...

Study offers another reason to cry at weddings
(Editorial ~ 04/10/08)
Most of us can't help it, we like to cry at weddings. Perhaps we're remembering the couple when they were children, or maybe we're just recalling our naivete. We wish the couple the best, but in our hearts we know there's something to those vows, "for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer ..."...

Need your help
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/10/08)
They need your help! After 25 years of taking in and caring for the unwanted and neglected pets of the area, The McCook Humane Society is planning an addition to the Animal Shelter at 100 South St. to enhance the shelter space by adding four dog kennels and enclosing the back door to make it more energy efficient and have storage space...

Saddened by story
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/10/08)
As my husband and I finished chores and drove through the cows that are calving one more time, I couldn't help but think how lucky our cows are and the horrific life of the cattle we have been reading about in the Gazette. I am saddened and sickened by the stories and (in my opinion) the disgusting decision made by the Red Willow County officials...

Flouride is neurotoxin
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/10/08)
Legislation is being passed to force fluoridation upon us! Lets get started! I am a man of the fewest words spoken for the most effect. I promise not to bombard you with a cannonade of words: 10. Fluoride in animals studies accumulates in the brain and can alter or cause damage to any animal...

Don't blame Obama
(Column ~ 04/10/08)
Call me dense, but frankly I just don't get it. Why should one person be blamed for the words that come out of another person's mouth? Several years ago, when my mouth tended to outrun my brain -- not that it doesn't happen now, but this particular incident happened several years ago -- Brad ran into a situation similar to the one Barack Obama is experiencing now...
