Somber walk crowns local Lenten services
(Features ~ 04/07/07)
Icy sidewalks and freezing temperatures did not deter 14 hardy souls from taking the annual Way of the Cross pilgrimage into downtown McCook Friday, nor did it deter the 81 attendees from the Good Friday service that followed at First Congregational Church...

Back to Iraq
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/07/07)
I'm going to Iraq again. It wasn't an easy decision. A large part of me just wants a normal life. But something deeper in me has to serve wherever I can be of use. So, I'm going to help in the rebuilding as an engineer. It seems that my skill set -- including a previous deployment to Iraq, education as an engineer and some Arabic language training -- can be of use right now. So I accepted a one-year position with the Army Corps of Engineers...

Use common sense around Easter eggs
(Editorial ~ 04/07/07)
Ask a grocer what's the most popular item this weekend, and he or she is likely to have one answer: Eggs. Either that, or those yellow marshmallow chicks, or jelly beans, or gaily-covered chocolate eggs. Thanks for story
(Letter to the Editor ~ 04/07/07)
Thank you for printing the article about Stryker, the K-9 officer in Tuesday (March 27th) Gazette. We all appreciate Stryker's service to the community. As I am paying for it, however, I demand the four eminent McCookites portrayed be Dick Trail, Paul Schneider, Mr. Yost and Seve Tamel. P.S. If this project turns out to be a hoax, you will be hearing from my attorney, Herbie S. Korpus...

The following was sent to McCook Community College: I am writing this letter to question the decision to allow Mr. Jim Garretson to teach Physics 2990: Creation Science, as though creation science is a serious scientific alternative to the theory of evolution. ...

The changing face of journalism
(Column ~ 04/07/07)
I had four different majors as an undergraduate and three more in graduate school before I finally discovered and fell in love with Sociology and made it my life's work. But my very first major, as a 17-year-old freshman at the University of Arkansas, was journalism. ...

Airport property tax dispute turned out right
(Column ~ 04/07/07)
The council meeting Monday the 2nd only lasted about an hour. At least half of that was spent in executive session but things turned out well. The best part was vindication of a stand that I took as a councilmember yo many years ago. A bit of background:...
