Kent Hardin, Gene Morris bag holes-in-one The 16th hole at McCook's Heritage Hills Golf Course was very, very good for McCook golfers Kent Hardin and Gene Morris. Both shot holes-in-one on the 155-yard 16th hole. Hardin used a 9-iron and Morris used a 7-wood...

Moving on from school, business issues
(Editorial ~ 07/09/04)
For more than a decade, McCook has been in an uproar over water and school buildings. During that time span, few days have passed without conflict or controversy, as a prolonged quarrel raged in the community over what should be done to resolve the issues...

More on IQs
(Letter to the Editor ~ 07/09/04)
**Dear Editor, There are a couple of things I would like to point out regarding the July 2 column written by Mike Hendricks. 1. Mr. Hendricks' suggestion that Nebraskans have a "blind-eyed allegiance to a particular perspective" because of their consistent conservative bent is not a fair assessment. Undoubtedly some do, but this is true of conservatives and liberals alike and thus it is unimportant. ...

Life without viruses, spam
(Column ~ 07/09/04)
My fondness for the horse and cart over break-down-prone vehicles is no secret. (If there were tie-up posts in front of the grocery store, I'd consider a gallop into town.) The same can be said of my preference for paper over the computer. (Every one of these columns is written long-hand before making its way onto the computer.) I'm obviously in the minority. ...

Cooler weather may cut West Nile
(Local News ~ 07/09/04)
Recent rainfalls and cooler days may cause an increase in the number of mosquitoes in Southwest Nebraska, but with any luck it won't be the mosquitoes that carry West Nile Virus. According to Margaret Swanda of the Red Willow County Health Department the rainfall will increase standing water which will in turn increase the mosquito population. But the culex pipiens, the most common carrier of the disease, prefer warmer temperatures...

No singing in the rain
(Column ~ 07/09/04)
I've always liked spontaneous trips better than plan-ned trips and have been that way since college, when nothing was more fun than to take a road trip on the spur of the moment. It seems like when we plan out all the details of a trip, our expectations are raised too high and the trip ends up being a disappointment because reality never matches the dream. I had the opportunity for another spontaneous road trip last weekend...

Rain helps, but drought far from over
(Editorial ~ 07/09/04)
"Rain, rain come any day. It's been wet and we like it that way." *** Admittedly, the above is a poor attempt at lyric writing, but at least the ditty expresses the overwhelming desire in the Tri-State Region for a continuance of the soaking rains which have fallen in the first part of July...

Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado water officials agree that the water model developed by the three states to calculate the depletion of stream flows in the Republican River Basin caused by ground water pumping is "a decent model" ... "one of the best."...
