In the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attack, there have been numerous death threats and vandalism targeting Muslims and Arab Americans. She was born Aug. 22, 1921, at Wamego, Kan., to Harry M. and Alta (Snapp) Claywell. On July 4, 1943, she married Russell L. Owens at Topeka. She was a homemaker until his death on Oct. 24, 1968.
