Week Five's High School Football Stars
*Cord Huettner-Falls City - 6-2, 215 pound "off-the-radar" back exploded for a stunning 382 yards 0n 32 carries in a shocking 54-7 win over previously undefeated Lincoln Lutheran. Taking the direct snap out of the Shotgun formation, Huettner ran for 6 touchdowns in the win. He scored on jaunts of 10, 2, 25, 71, 84, and 1 yard. For good measure, Cord threw a 25 yard TD pass. We think this kid always was a football player, but when you play for a team that was winless the year before, it may be tough to get any attention. You have our attention now, Mr. Huettner.
*Austin Havlena-David City and Preston Luedke-Columbus Lakeview - These two close friends put on an explosive display of rushing last Friday in David City. Havlena ran for 279 big ones on a staggering 44 carries and scored on runs of 6, 17, 6, 3, and 3 yards. Luedke rushed for 207-22 carries and scored on a 52 yard run. More importantly, Luedke had 21 tackles to lead Lakeview in a wild 41-34 win. The teams combined for 836 yards of offense and The Havlena/Luedke combination combined for 486 rushing yards. Why did I have to miss this baby?
*Jordan Wetovick-Eustis-Farnum - Had a hand in 7 touchdowns as the Knights beat Loomis 46-30. Wetovick rushed for 206 yards and scored on runs of 3, 14, 12, 43 and 35 yards. He also threw TD passes of 14 and 24 yards to Dustin Koch, who ended the night with 90 yards receiving.
*Lane Asp-Loomis - 5-9, 165 senior rushed for 185 yards for the Wolves in the loss to Eustis-Farnum. Asp scored from 4 and 56 yards out.
*Clay Fisher-Millard North - 6-1, junior defensive back stepped in to the quarterback slot when Isaac Aakre was held out due to a concussion. The Mustangs never lost a step as Fisher sprinted for 244 yards on 34 carries, leading MN to a 45-10 thumping of Omaha Burke. Fisher also tossed TWO touchdown passes....yes, I said two. Usually Millard North passes only twice in a game. This Friday it's back to defense only for Fisher as Aakre should return to his QB slot.
Zach Rouzee-Grand Island Northwest - 6-4 senior broke the Class B single game rushing record for the second time this season. In a 40-23 win against visiting Gering, Rouzee passed for 421 yards while completing 27 of 45 yards. Rouzee threw 5 touchdown passes and now leads the entire state with 1,570 yards passing. By the way, the singe season passing record for Class B is 2,486 by Mike Wahlstrom of Chadron, set in 2008. At the pace Rouzee is on now (314.game) he would be at 2,826 yards at the end of the 9 game regular season. The 11-Man single season record in 2,846 yards set by Fremont Bergan's Riley Gross in 2010. Gross played in 13 games that year.
*Alex Ditoro-Papillion La Vista - Let's give some props to the 2nd leading passer in the state. Ditoro hit 22 of 36 tosses for 379 yards a 5 TDs in a 58-22 blasting of Bellevue West. Ditoro also ran 50 yards for a score and now has a season passing total of 1,375 yards. Alex is completing his passes at a rate of 66% and averaging 13.23 per completion. He is just a junior. This Friday is the premier week in Class A as Ditoro and his buddies take on #1 Millard North.
*Luke Glenn-Shelton - Broke lose for 309 yards on 18 carries and scored 6 TDs in a 64-12 win over Axtell. Glenn has only carried the ball 59 times in 5 games yet has rushed for 788 yards and 16 touchdowns. That's 13.36 yards a carry, friends.
*Joel Grafel-Hastings St. Cecilia - Punishing fullback rambled for 203-16 carries in a 67-0 route over winless Superior. Grafel hit the end zone from 15, 12, 67, 9 and 7 yards out. Grafel is also a vicious tackler from his LB slot and has been the past 3 seasons.
*Jordan Slough-Doniphan-Trumbull - Junior RB is on a tear the past 2 weeks. Two weeks ago, Slough rushed for 319 yards against Wood River. Last Friday, he ripped through a good Thayer Central defense for 277 yards on 24 carries and scored on runs of 65, 6, 4, 60, and 4 yards as the Cardinals won 45-6. Slough now has 777 yards for the year, 596 coming in the past 2 weeks.....and this week the Cardinals play Superior.
*Josh Coyle-Atkinson West Holt - No hiding the fact this young man is one of my favorite players. In a 38-24 loss to powerful Lutheran High NE, Coyle rushed for 206 yards on 23 touches and scored on TD runs of 51 and 70 yards. Coyle also threw a 10 touchdown pass to Connor Osborne in the loss. By the way, Coyle had no carries in the 4th quarter due to the fact Lutheran High NE had the ball for 8 and half minutes. Defenses just hold their breath every time this kid even thinks about touching the ball.
*Aarin Rathke-Lutheran High NE - 169-26 carries for the number 2 Eagles (C-2) in the win over West Holt. Kenny Blank added to that with 122-26 carries of his own. Blank scored 4 times from 5, 1, 1 and 29 yards.
*Jacon Morrill-Creighton - Junior TWO TIME 1000 Yard Rusher had 160 yards on 26 carries in a 32-22 loss to top rated Elgin/Pope John in an afternoon game last Friday. Morrill scored on a 47 yard run.
*Blake Anderson-Elgin/Pope John - Rushed for 112-16 carries and had a 1 yard sneak for a score in the D-1 dandy.
*Ryan Batenhorst-Fremont Bergan - Sharpshooting quarterback had a field day against Tekamah-Herman by passing for 384 yards and 4 touchdowns in the Knight's 39-14 victory.
*Josh Schollmeyer-Arlington - Burned Omaha Concordia for 214 yards on only 13 carries (16.46 per) and scored on runs of 56, 28, and 58 yards in the 52-6 frolic.
*Luke McNitt-Kearney - Delivered the payback to Grand Island in the form of 130 rushing on 20 carries and 11-18 for 101 yards passing in the 31-14 win. McNitt ran for a 3 yard TD and threw scoring passes of 12 yards to Isaac Brown and 25 yards to Hunter King in the District win.
*Jonathan Withrop-Kimball - Sophomore stunned Mitchell with 90 and 78 yard kick-off returns for touchdowns in the Longhorns 33-24 win.
*Ivan Damit-Og - Wilcox-Hildreth - Sophomore continued to impress with 192 yards on only 15 carries in the Falcons 52-24 loss to salty Amherst. Damit-Og scored on runs of 51 and 35 yards and now has rushed for 544 yards for the season.
*Jake Paulsen-Cozad - Smooth speedster had 183 yards rushing and scored on runs of 23 and 79 yards in the Haymakers 32-20 win against Chase County. Paulsen set the tone for the game by returning the opening kick-off 90 yards for a score.
*Caden Weverka-Arapahoe - 162 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns (1, 3, 6, 4 and 1 yard) in a big 36-20 win against Elm Creek. Junior QB has now run for 585 yards and passed for another 244 while leading Arapahoe to a 5-0 record.
*Isaac Walton-Ralston - Junior was tough on those Bennington Badgers by rushing for 215 yards on 18 carries in the Rams 34-10 win. Walton, who had 615 yards a year ago in a late season surge, already has 693 this season.
*Tyler Theye-Fairbury - When this guy gets his chance, he burns teams. Theye led Fillmore Central have it with 174 yards on 20 carries in the Jeffs 34-19 win. Theye escaped for TD runs of 74, 22, 32 and 5 yards in the win.
*Jake Slager-McCook - The runaway bull ripped Sidney for 135-15 tries and scored a 5 yard TD in the Bison 34-12 win over the visiting Red Raiders.
*Jackson Love-Norfolk Catholic - High stepping junior ran for 125-14 carries to help lift the Knights beat Wahoo 35-14 in what was billed as Class C-1's "Game-of-the Year". Love caught a 34 yard TD pass in the win. Catholic finally gets a well deserved week of this Friday.
*Tyler Kavan-Wahoo - 110-24 carries in the loss for the Warriors. The marked man scored both Wahoo TDs with a 29 yard run and a 75 yard interception return.
*Luke Johnson-Potter-Dix - QB was 11-19 passing for 312 yards and 6 scores in a 65-24 win over Banner County. Bryant Knigge caught TD passes of 57, 55 and 35 yards. Tyler Maginie was on the receiving end of 13 and 28 yard throws and Jake Johnson also caught a 59 yard TD toss in the lopsided win. Johnson now thrown for 1,085 yards in 4 games for Potter-Dix....nothing new for that place.
*Tyson Howard-Ansley-Litchfield - Big Tyson ran for 163 yards and scored a 31 yard run in a smashing 70-46 win against Alma on the road. Howard also threw scoring passes that covered 40, 14, 31 and 45 yards. Taylor Monks had 124 yards receiving for Ansley-Litchfield and caught 45 and 31 yard TD passes. Monk also added a 74 yard kick return for another score.
*Ryan and Tyler Dahlgren-Bertrand - Dahlgren boys made life miserable for Elwood in the 42-7 win. Ryan rushed for 181 yards and scored on a 50 yard run. Tyler ran for 104 yards and scored on 27 and 74 yard runs. He also caught TD passes of 42 and 29 yards in the Vikings win.
*Tanner Bailey-Elkhorn - I think the Antlers found a running back. Bailey broke loose for 206 yards on 13 totes. Bailey also scored on an 80 yard run in Elkhorns 38-21 victory over Columbus.
*Zach Holka-Malcolm - Clipper's 5-8, 170 pound back ran for 171 yards and scored on pass receptions of 51 and 25 yards in Malcolm's 34-20 win against Centennial.
*Jordan Steffen-Elmwood-Murdock - 144-15 carries and TD runs of 26, 2 and 25 yards in their 41-0 whitewash over Conestoga.
*Devin Marteney-Pawnee City - 6-0, 190 pound back finally broke out with 238-22 carries in the Indians 62-30 win over Friend. Marteney, who rushed for 1,355 yards a year ago, ran for touchdowns covering 50 and 1 yard in the win. 'Bout time for a easier game for 1-3 Pawnee City.
They have faced Falls City Sacred Heart, BDS and McCool Junction the first three games of the season.....ouch.
*Austin Rose-Lincoln North Star - RB never lets up. Ran for 122-19 in the Gators 35-0 win over Lincoln High. Scored all the TDs but one, on runs of 1, 10, 3 and 35 yards. Rose, a junior, now has 766 yards for the year. A player like Austin Rose is every coach's dream.
*Connor Moeller-Tri-County - Led TC to their 1st win of 2012 by rushing for 182 yards in a 49-0 win against Humboldt-TRS. Moeller also scored 3 times and had 13 tackles on defense for the Trojans. The 6-0, 185 FB had 528 yards a year ago.
*Tanner Mazour-Boone Central/NG - Slick QB completed 12-14 passes for 209 yards and threw scoring passes of 30 yards to Tyler Hedlund and 36 yards to Hunter Headley. Mazour also rushed for 129-6 carries and scored on a 46 yard run in the 48-14 over Scotus.
*Blake Slizowski-Boone Central - RB ran for 114-16 carries and scored on runs of 4, 4 and 33 yards in the same game. Boone Central/NG is a legit state title contender in C-1, trust me.
*Norfolk Catholic Defense - Darn right I'm gonna name every one of these starters. These guys are the back bone of this splendid football team. They really shined in the 35-14 win at Wahoo.
They are: Dylan Field (#3/DB), Brandon Becker (#7/FS), Connor Ketter (#11/DE), Jordan Bellar (#15/DB), Isaac Pfeifer (#26/OLB), Kyle Schafer (#27/ILB), Jackson Love (#38/LB), Riley Knake (#40/OLB), Garret McCarthy (#50/E), Michael Obermiller (#55/G), Mitch Hoferer (#58/T). These dudes don't budge on "D"!
