  • Great article!

As coach of the 1984 Lexington St Ann’s Knights I would like to get something off my chest

This team has long been criticized for the beat down received by a great Clearwater team in 1984

I will admit it was men against boys

    David vs Goliath

However the NSAA had us in a difficult situation heading into the final game

We played the 9:00 game in the semi finals on Friday night before the Saturday morning final

The game in Pershing started late due to being the last game of the day and some earlier games running longer than scheduled

We left Pershing at 11:30 pm

Most eating establishments in Lincoln were closed

    We probably ate at Denny’s?

We were scheduled to wear the same uniforms the next day as we wore Friday night

The finals game was scheduled for 11 am Saturday

Our kids got to bed sometime between 12:30 and 1 am

    Coaches washed uniforms

Got the kids out of bed by 6:30 am to eat breakfast and head to Devaney

The kids had just beaten their second undefeated team in two days and were in the state finals on state TV fairly early on Saturday morning

I don’t think any slept much Friday night while dealing with fatigue from a late night and anxiety of what lay ahead on Saturday morning

We were all worn out both mentally and physically Saturday

The kids had nothing left in the tank

I want people to know we were never embarrassed by the final outcome

But rather very proud of what was accomplished in those 3 days in March of 1984!

Articles point to the fact the final lopsided score was the most lopsided beatdown in D2 history

It was the first D2 game ever

    That game started the history

I don’t know who but some years later another team was defeated by a larger margin in a D2 final and we were off the hook!

I have wanted to tell our side of that story for 42 years!!

No players on that team would want to make excuses

    My point is

It was bad scheduling by the NSAA

We played the 7 pm game on Thursday and the 9 pm on Friday

NSAA wants us to play at 11 am on Saturday?

Consistency in scheduling would have had the D2 championship at 7 or 9 on Saturday night

    Clearwater was a great team

    As was St Ann’s!

The scheduling issue has been rectified long ago as teams now play a consistent schedule game time wise through out the week!

I hope this is not posted

I have followed several of your articles that describe the teams and athletes from years gone by and they are great articles

It was when describing the year 1984 where you refer to the Cinderella glass slipper broke into a million pieces got my attention!

    Great line!

Like Paul Harvey used to say

“Now you know the rest of the story”

    Thanks
