Embarrassment of RichesPosted Sunday, October 4, 2009, at 10:38 AM
I am embarrassed today after the results of the Olympic Committee's decision not to award Chicago with the 2016 Olympics. But I'm not embarrassed by President Obama or his wife or Oprah for going oversees and personally lobbying for Chicago. I am embarrassed by the rights reaction to the loss.
For eight years, all we heard from certain elements within this group was "America first" or that if anyone wasn't putting America's interest first and foremost were "anit-America". Here was another chance for them to push that meme and hope that Chicago would get the Olympics because that would provide a huge boost not only to Chicago but the United States.
What was their reaction, however? They cheered. That's right, their hatred for President Obama is so deep that when the announcement was made there was open cheering that America had lost out on the Olympics.
This really does show to the casual observer of politics that these people are really only America first when it involves their party or their ideology.
Americans for Prosperity, who if they were a liberal group Bill O'Reilly would undoubtedly call them a dangerous group, actually interrupted their meeting to announce the decision to cheers and high fives.
The Weekly Standard released a blog by John McCormack that the titled "Chicago loses! Chicago loses! in which he remarked that "Cheers erupt at WEEKLY STANDARD world headquarters." But of course almost that entire blog has been scrubbed including the title which has been since changed to just read simply "Chicago loses".
This is truly an embarrassment to all Americans to have a segment of our population that so completely hates our president that they will honestly cheer and celebrate against the United States if it means it results in a "loss" for the president.
It surely is an embarrassment of riches.
