County funding for non-profits continues, permits granted

McCOOK, Neb. — Red Willow County Commissioners unanimously approved the requests of continued support from two non-profit businesses in McCook at their July 13 meeting at the courthouse.
Donna Goad, representing Domestic Abuse/Sexual Assault Services, thanked the commissioners for their support, but did not request a budget increase. On the other hand, the McCook Humane Society, represented by Joyce Anderson and Board President Michelle Ervin, requested an additional $100 per month for anticipated upgrades within the humane society building. The request was denied at this time due to budget shortages. Anderson pointed out that most area shelters charge a $50 surrender fee for animals being placed with them.
“McCook Humane Society does not charge a surrender fee at this time, but...” she also stated, “Volunteers are also welcome. We could use more.”
Following approved recommendations from the Red Willow Planning Commission meeting earlier this month, three public hearings were needed to finalize approved Resolutions No.1597, 1598, and 1599. A conditional use permit by Great Plains Towers, LLC, for a telecommunication tower near Lebanon and a preliminary and final plat for the K. Miller Subdivision east of Bartley were granted by unanimous approval.
A final guest, Jon Cannon from the Nebraska Association of County Officials, presented an informational packet to each commissioner regarding information about Red Willow County. Included in the packet was a single page report entitled, "Red Willow County Profile Report", which included five categories of major statistics. He also encouraged the commissioners to attend the October 16 legislative conference in Kearney, as well as the December 16-18, 2026, main conference in Kearney. He discussed the association's legislative bills that were passed, LB 596, which raises marriage licenses from $25 to $50; LB 803, which increases informational data on the “pink cards” received in the mail; and LB663, addressing a standard of review for planning and zoning of new types of structures, such as data centers, and how to regulate them. More information about Red Willow County can be obtained from the Nebraska County Explorer webpage.
A session of the ongoing budget workshop and the property valuation protest hearings concluded the agenda for the day.
