L. Jean Sughroue

McCOOK, Neb. – L. Jean Sughroue ascended into heaven on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Neb., at the age of 90.
Jean was born June 19, 1935, to Ora W. and Bessie M. (Webster) Fisher at Danbury, Neb. She attended school at Indianola grades K-12. She attended college at McCook, Neb., and taught for one year at District No. 39.
On August 18, 1953, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Don Sughroue. They made their home east of Indianola and eventually moved to Don’s family farm. To this union five children were born on the farm north of Bartley. They raised their family here until their retirement in 1995, at which time they moved to Cambridge, Neb., where she continued working at a bank.
She was a devout Christian and member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola and later St. John’s Catholic Church. During these times, she served as President of the Alter Societies and taught Catechism in both parishes. She also worked at Indianola Housing, Cambridge CoAP and First Central Bank.
Jean enjoyed quilting, playing cards and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Donald Sughroue; parents Ora and Bessie Fisher; a very favorite grandma Isebella (Webster) Blake; infant daughter Agnes Maria; son Danny Sughroue; brothers, Gayle (Pat) Tines, Raymond (Patsy) Fisher, and Larry Fisher.
Those left to celebrate Jean’s life are her children, Donnie (Angie) Sughroue of Bartley, Neb., Cindy (Dale) Fahnholz of McCook, Neb., and Kathy (Gaylord) Smallfoot of Eustis, Neb.; seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren; brother Dennie (Susan) Puelz of Lincoln, Neb., and sister in laws Charlotte Fisher of North Platte, Neb., and Mary Sughroue of Culbertson, Neb.,; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, are suggested to Jean’s name to be designated at a later date.
The Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola, Neb. A memorial mass will follow the rosary on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola, Neb., with Father Kimminau as the celebrant. Inurnment will follow in the St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery.
