Charles "Dick" Stitt

OMAHA, Neb. – Charles “Dick” Stitt, of McCook, Neb., passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha. He was 79 years old.
Dick was born in Benkelman, Neb., on March 1, 1947, to Edwin and Arline (Morrison) Stitt. He attended Benkelman High School in Benkelman and graduated in 1966. After graduation, he worked at Craw Implement in Stratton, Neb.
In 1968, Dick enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed on the USS Ajax for the next two and a half years. The Ajax was home ported in Sasebo, Japan. During that time, the ship traveled to the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam and China. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1971. Dick was proud to serve his county and was a member of the American Legion and VFW.
On October 7, 1973, Dick married Marilyn Shields at McCook Christian Church in McCook and settled on their farm south of McCook where they then welcomed their children, Daniel and Lynette.
Dick worked for Barnett Lumber Co., TRW, and then spent the next 38 years as a Lineman for McCook Public Power until his retirement in 2013. Throughout his married life and beyond his retirement, Dick also farmed the land on which he and Marilyn made their home.
Dick had the gift of conversation. Within minutes, strangers left as friends. His true joy was his grandkids, Allie, Tyler, Adysen and Kynsley. He loved attending their sporting events and 4-H activities.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Arline Stitt; and brother, George “Melvin” Stitt; and brother in-law, Mike Nothnagel.
Dick is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marilyn Stitt; son, Daniel (Jamie) Stitt and their children Allie and Tyler; daughter, Lynette (Jesse) Chmiel and their children, Adysen and Kynsley; brother, David (Cindi) Stitt; sisters, Leanna (Don) Sackett, Erin (Cathy Pendelton) Stitt, Sharon (Alan) Streeter; sisters-in-law, Joyce (Dick) Neel and Darlene Nothnagel; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Cremation was chosen. Visitation with family will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook.
Memorial Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026, at the Willow Christian Church in Indianola, with Pastor Heath Kelley officiating. Burial with full military honors is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.
