Bison cap stellar careers in Class B state meet

OMAHA, Neb. — A quartet of McCook Bison athletes capped stellar high schol careers while three others competed against Class B’s best at Omaha Burke Stadium on Wednesday.
Senior Emma Cappel completed fourth state meet in four seasons which has featured several Class B medals wether track or cross country.
Senior Jaylea Walgren hurdled to Burke for a third consecutive year, while seniors Oliver Corbett and Miles Pollmann both returned for those Bison boys.
Junior Halleigha Beavers repeated her Class B high jump state appearance.
Sophomores Blake Willis and Krayten Ureste will join her in helping to power the Bison charge again next spring.
None captured a state medal on Wednesday or Tuesday.

Boys triple jump: Willis cleared 3’9 1/2” while gaining some valuable state experience. He also reached Class A state as a Bison top bowler earlier this year.
Aurora senior Jayden Slagle won the trip jump when he cleared 47/4 1/2” ahead of Omaha Gross senior Dut Akot’s 46’4 3/4” and Wyatt Leibentritt from Omaha Skutt at 45’7 1/4”.
Cozad senior Chayden Hoffmaster finished fourth at 45’1 1/2”.
Girls high jump: Beavers’ high jump mark of 5’ topped five other Class B state qualifiers.
Her best height at 5’4” would have tied nine others who placed between third and 12th including Southwest Conference foe Lilly Fritton from Gothenburg.
Alexa Otto of Raymond Central earned the Class B championship when she cleared 5’6” in less attempts than Grand Island Northwest’s Elli Payne.
Girls 800-meter run: Cappel completed her Bison run in a time of 2:26.23. Waverly’s Emma Steffensen unleashed her career-best time of 2:07.88. to win Class B with Hastings junior Sophia Reynolds finishing second at 2:10.65.
Girls’ 300-meter hurdles: Walgren cleared her final Burke obstacle and finished at the 49.81 mark.
Auburn senior Addison Darnell’s career-best 43.55 claimed the title ahead of Lincoln Christian freshman Kallyn Kassebaum crossing at 44.27.
The McCook boys 400-meter relay with Corbett, Pollmann, WIllis and Ureste was 13th overall for that Bison best placing.
They recorded a time of 44.28 while champin Gretna East finished in 41.84 seconds.
Seward, Norris and Scottsbluff earned those next three places.
