McCook YMCA sets plans for swimming lessons

McCOOK, Neb. — Our YMCA swim lessons beginning June 1 are designed to build confidence, develop skills, and create a fun, safe experience for every swimmer.

Each session runs for 3 weeks, with 2 classes per week (6 total lessons).

Classes offered:

Parent & Tot: This class offers an introduction to the aquatic environment for infants. Toddlers and parents work on independent skills, including body control and balance. Children work with and without their parents to master the skills of kicking, pulling, and blowing bubbles together to form basic stroke and body position. Fundamental safety and aquatic skills are also introduced.

Toddler Private Lessons: This class offers an introduction to the aquatic environment for infants. Toddlers work on independent skills, including body control and balance. This program offers an introduction to the aquatic environment for infants. Focuses on water safety, comfortability, and floating.

Pre-School Level 1: Children become independent in the water, build confidence, and focus on the skills of the basic freestyle stroke, such as kicking, pulling, comfort putting their face in the water, and blowing bubbles. The goal is to swim 5 yards without fear or assistance. Safety self-rescue skills are introduced.

Pre-School Level 2: Can perform a front glide swim 10 yards without assistance. Can blow bubbles for 10 seconds.

Emphasis is on stroke development for freestyle and forward movement in the water. Basic self-rescue skills.

Learn to Swim Level 2: Can perform a front glide and swim 10 yards without assistance. Can blow bubbles for 10 seconds. Emphasis is on stroke development for freestyle and forward movement in water. Basic self-rescue skills performed independently.

Learn to Swim Level 3: Must be able to comfortably swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke with correct technique. Strokes are refined with a strong emphasis on proper stroke mechanics. Build endurance in freestyle and backstroke. Introduce butterfly. Reinforce safety through treading water and sidestroke. Diving.

Learn to Swim Level 4: Introduces basic stroke technique in freestyle and backstroke with endurance and reinforces water safety though treading water and elementary backstroke. Breaststroke kick is introduced. Complete freestyle and backstroke for 25 yards. Diving.

Private Lesson: One-on-one instructor able to adjust to level of swimming ability for a much more personalized lesson.
