Bison girls breeze to sweep of final regular-season dual

HASTINGS, Neb. — Wind should never bother a McCook Bison even if Thursday’s gusts were faster than many motorists meandering out for Sunday coffee.

“The regular season came to a close on a 40-mile-per-hour wind a warm afternoon in Hastings,” coach Matt Wiemers confirmed. “I am proud of the girls for adjusting their game to the tough weather conditions.”

Wiemers’ Bison are always tough as a 4-0 sweep of the Adams Central Patriots proved again on Thursday.

Senior Abby Schneider secured her 30th win of the season at No. 1 singles with her 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Abby was very consistent with her ground strokes and that led to numerous easy points,” three-time state champion coach Wiemers remarked. “She definitely brought her game today.

She’s now 30-6 while junior Abi Thompson reached 35-5 thanks to 6-2, 6-3 No. 2 decisions over her A.C. foe.

“Abi did a nice job of approaching the net when she needed to and finishing as well as using drops shots to keep her opponent off balance,” Wiemers observed.

Thompson takes a 35-5 record into this practice week before the Class B state state tourney starting after Memorial Day weekend.

Senior Elizabeth McConville and junior Cassidy Rogers showed comeback magic, rallying from 4-1 down for a No. 1 doubles 10-7 triumph.

“It was good for the girls to get a tough match,” the excellent food supplier at home matches observed. “Adams Central played well.”

McCook’s No. 2 doubles showed similiar toughness against both strong breezes and Adams Central’s 3-0 start.

Senior Madison Wilcox and freshman Kenadi Porter turned the early adversity into an excellent 6-3, 6-3 victory.

“Kenadi served well and that lead to some easy points for Madi at the net,” Wiemers said as this Bison dynamic duo is now 24-9.

“We will have a full week of practice next week, as state will not be played until the Tuesday-Wednesday after Memorial Day,” the coach concluded referring to May 26-27. “This will give some valuable time to really focus in and work on us.”

Wiemers said Class B state seedings and pairings for the opening round will be announced on Tuesday.
