Johnson awarded Educator of the Year

McCOOK, Neb. - On Monday, Sara Schneider, Director of the McCook Chamber of Commerce, presented the McCook Area Educator of the Year Award to McCook Elementary School second-grade teacher Kim Johnson.
Johnson brings a lengthy and well-rounded background in education to the classroom. She began her academic career at McCook Community College, earning an Associate of Applied Science and the Walsh Brady Full Tuition Art Scholarship, before completing a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a science minor at Kearney State College, graduating cum laude, and later earning a Master of Science in Biology from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She has taught every elementary grade from kindergarten through fifth grade and currently teaches second grade, while also serving as an adjunct instructor at Colby Community College, where she teaches online physical and earth science courses and previously taught online biology at McCook Community College. Her professional development includes certification as a Canvas Certified Educator, experience across multiple learning platforms and specialized training through programs such as Project WILD, Project Learning Tree, AIMS, GEMS, the National Arbor Day Foundation, and Agriculture in the Classroom, along with presentations at state and national conferences, all contributing to her focus on creating structured, engaging, and real-world-connected learning environments.
In notes provided to the Gazette, Johnson said she was drawn to teaching through early experiences working with children and a desire to provide stability and make a positive impact on future generations. She noted that, despite changes in education and society, children still need to feel loved, encouraged, and supported—perhaps now more than ever. While acknowledging the challenges of the profession and the concerns that often extend beyond the school day, she said that sense of responsibility gives the work its meaning, with her focus centered on showing up consistently and helping students feel prepared and ready to learn.
Johnson was nominated for consistently going above and beyond for her students and their families, building strong relationships through open, supportive communication and a willingness to guide both academic and personal growth. Nominators cited her creativity, compassion and more than 30 years of experience as key strengths, noting her ability to design engaging, hands-on learning experiences and to adapt instruction to meet individual needs. They also highlighted her skill in addressing difficult conversations at an age-appropriate level, helping students reflect, grow and feel supported, and praised her unwavering commitment to motivating every child to reach their highest potential in a classroom environment where students feel understood, encouraged and inspired.
The McCook Area Educator of the Year Award is made possible through the generosity of Allen Strunk and his family, reflecting their belief in the importance of education. In 1998, Strunk, a former owner and publisher of the McCook Gazette, provided a gift to the McCook Area Chamber of Commerce to establish the award, which continues to be funded by the Strunk family. The honor is presented annually to an area educator selected by an education committee in recognition of outstanding performance and a commitment to helping students reach their highest potential, with recipients receiving both a plaque and a $2,500 award.
