Bison epic 9-0 flurry in final 36 seconds for win

McCOOK, Neb. — Somebody hit the “turbo button” on Tuesday’s McCook-Minden basketball game and some may still be wondering how this happened Tuesday night.
The Bison put ESPN legend Chris Berman’s “fastest three minutes in sports” to shame.
Because in exactly 3:06, McCook scored 19 points to turn a 62-55 deficit into one 74-64 Southwest Conference tournament victory.
So much for Whippets owning a super fast nickname — and hat wasn’t even the most impressive fact.
McCook (13-3 record) was only leading 65-64 with 36 seconds remaining.
The Bison even missed a backdoor layup off coach Joe Imus’ timeout.
Yet when senior Brody Graham soared in for the offensive rebound, this super-charged final flurry was officially going full speed.
Graham found senior Bryson Gullion, who smoothly made free throws just like he had drilled 21 three-pointers during two games last week.
Gullion soon hustled down to become part of a disputed offensive foul called against Minden. Some Whippet fans are still wondering about that call.
No matter. Graham again spotted an open sophomore Mason West for another foul.
West missed his second free throw, but suddenly speedy junior Kooper Rakes captured another rebound and scored before old sportswriters could barely blink. Rakes made his “and one” charity shot just in time for West to steal an ensuing inbounds pass and finish this layup.
Just like that, 74-64 and Minden basically just ran out those final few remaining seconds.
McCook advances into Friday’s SWC tourney semifinals where another challenge awaits: undefeated No. 1-seed Ogallala. Opening tip is set for 5 p.m.
Watch for more details from Tuesday’s contest on Friday.
The unofficial Bison scoring summary:
BISON (74) — Brody Graham 16 points, Trey Tiller 14, Kooper Rakes 14, Bryson Gullion 13, Mason West 8, Tripp Raile 6, Oliver Corbett 1.
