Bison announce 'back-in-Class B' schedule for 2024-25
McCook's 2024 Class B varsity schedule was just released today:
Week 1: At Beatrice Orangemen
Last year: Beatrice went 2-7 against a power-packed schedule which included Omaha Skutt, Norris and Waverly. Wins were over Lincoln Northwest, 27-20; and 14-7 vs. Crete.
Last meeting: A 21-17 McCook win at Beatrice in 2019.
Week 2: Aurora Huskies
Last year: Aurora finished 6-4 and lost a 9-7 playoff opener to Adams Central in Hastings. The Huskies' other defeats to C-1 state champ Boone Central, power Ashland-Greenwood and 21-19 vs. Adams Central.
Last meeting: A 32-10 Aurora home win over McCook in 2021.
Week 3: At Waverly Vikings
Last year: Waverly went 11-1 and reached the Class B semifinals before losing 38-26 to Omaha Skutt. The Vikings averaged 38 points per game and allowed less than 11.
Last meeting: A 36-30 Waverly upset playoff win at Weiland Field in 2018.
Week 4: Crete Cardinals
Last year: Crete finished 5-5, getting blasted 65-7 at Bennington in Class B state first round. The Cardinals suffered other losses of 52 and 42 points.
Last meeting: A 24-14 Crete Cardinals win at Crete in 2021.
Week 5: At Gering Bulldogs
Last year: An improved Gering team went 2-7 with five losses by 10 points or less. The Bulldogs barely lost 32-31 at Grand Island Northwest and played a 21-14 finale vs. Hastings.
Last meeting: A 28-9 McCook win at Weiland Field in 2021.
Week 6: Hastings Tigers
Last year: Hastings went 7-4 with five wins in the last seven games including a 35-6 Class B playoff victory over Seward. The Tigers dropped the state quarterfinal, 45-21, at Waverly.
Last meeting: A 27-7 McCook win at Weiland Field that started Joe Vetrovsky's head coaching career in 2021.
Week 7: Ogallala Indians
Last year: McCook's only returning C-1 opponent from 2022 and 2023 where the teams each won home games. Ogallala started 0-2, but won seven straight as the Bison fell 34-14 on the Indians' home turf. Ogallala finished 7-3 following a 36-32 C-1 playoff loss at Auburn.
Last meeting: An Ogallala Indians 34-14 victory at Ogallala last fall.
Week 8: At Scottsbluff Bearcats
Last year: The Bearcats actually experienced a 6-5 "down year", though they won a 14-0 Class B playoff game at York before losing 35-16 to Elkhorn North in those state quarterfinals. The Bearcats were streaky with a 3-0 start, four-game losing streak and then three more wins by a 107-7 final margin.
Last meeting: A 21-14 Scottsbluff triumph in 2021 at Scottsbluff.
Week 9: Lexington Minutemen
Last year: A forgettable 0-9 Lexington campaign where the Minutemen were outscored 394-54. They were shut out four times with their closest game being a 20-17 loss at Crete on Sept. 1. A 27-14 final at Lincoln Northwest was Lex's only other contest within 26 points.
Last meeting: A stunning 8-5 Lexington victory over the Bison at Lexington in 2021.
