McCOOK, Neb. — The season really gets rolling after holidays and McCook High’s girls are on even ground through their first eight contests.

Coach Amy Scheil would love to see a little more even considering these Bison are 1-3 since a 3-1 start.

Yet the Bison showed great heart against Holdrege, rallying from 13 points down as junior guard Brooklyn Gillen scored 17 points.

The Dusters still prevailed, 47-42, to follow a 53-31 Bison setback at Kearney Catholic on Friday.

Freshman Cali Crawford’s four three-pointers highlighted the Friday performance. She connected again once Saturday evening.

Coach Amy Scheil proviced some insights about the weekend.

“I really thought the girls bounced back from Friday’s night.

Unfortunately,Friday we didn’t play up to our potential and we let their physicality get to us.

Saturday the girls played a really aggressive zone defense and did a nice job keeping their heads up. Briley got down the court well I which put a lot of pressure of Holdrege to get back.

Holdrege got hot at the right time and got ahead by 13 but I was very pleased with how the girls never gave up and kept fighting to cut the deficit to three.

I thought the girls did a nice job working together as a team and not hesitating on their shots.

We had a lot of lay ups not go in which was the difference in the game, but thats something that we will focus on during practice this week and work out.

Brooklynn and Paige did a nice job bringing the ball down and getting their team set up, and Malia and Kori were awesome on defense.

Cali, Jaylea and Roslyn did a really good job coming off the bench, keeping the intensity up.”

The Bison will take a little holiday break from game action until next week’s Nebraska City Holiday Tournament.

McCook will play the tourney hosts on Thursday, Dec. 28 and finish tournament play one day later.
