GRAND ISLAND, Neb. —The McCook Unified Bowling Team visited Grand Island to compete in the Grand Island Northwest Bowling Tournament on Saturday and brought home a championship.

Teams bowled a five-game set to determine their place in each of the three tournaments.

McCook’s Team 1 of Caleb Shaw, Kolton Koetter and Zach Hinze rolled a 647 placing them in the top division.

They bowled over the competition in the Gold Division, beating Grand Island High’s second team in the quarterfinals 171 - 159 and 163 - 156.

In the semifinals, they got off to a slow start against Grand Island’s top team in a three-game match but rallied to win 114 - 137, 170 - 151, 152 - 140.

The championship round was an exciting one where McCook came out red hot.

Shaw-Koetter-Hinze eventually beat the host Vikings 173 - 137, 154- 155 and 189 - 122.

McCook’s No. 2 team of Riley O’Brien, Lacyn Keller and Mark Wolfe bowled a 488 placing them in Division 2.

They would fall in two games to the eventual champions of that division Norfolk 100 - 105 and 86 - 89.

Team 3 consisting of Blake Myers, Halee Maris and Layton Winters bowled a 481, also placing them in the Second Division.

They lost in a play-in round to the runner’s up from Cambridge in three games 122 - 124, 101 - 91, and 96 - 132.

The team of Madison Wiiest, Jalen Collicott bowled a 374 placing them in the third division.

They would lose in the first round to the eventual winners of the division Lexington 81 - 78, 67 - 94, and 58 - 78.

“ I am so proud of each and every one of these teams. They played well, but more importantly, showed great sportsmanship and teamwork,” McCook Unified bowling coach Lynne Kinne said.
