McCOOK, Neb. — This past Sunday, Oct 15, 2023 the faithful people of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church celebrated their 60th year of being part of the body of Christ in McCook.

Our Savior’s Lutheran began as a mission church of the American Lutheran Church.  Rev. Walter Kirkegaard served as the mission developer for the church and in March 1963 the first worship service was held at the courthouse where 56 people were in attendance.  The “Pioneer Families” of the newly forming congregation worshipped at the courthouse for a number of weeks until the chapel and the fellowship hall were built.

The first worship service in the existing building at 312 Seminole Drive was held on Sunday, October 27, 1963.  The congregation was “officially” organized at their first council meeting on December 10, 1963.

Early on, Marie Horner, one of the “Pioneer Families” created a scroll with the names of the founding members. This past Sunday two of the founding members shared stories of their memories as young kids attending Our Savior’s. (scroll picture with Sharon (Horner) Clark & Randy Johnson). Many in attendance shared stories like what we read in the Bible about the earlier churches that St. Paul wrote to in his letters. It is their strong faith and unity in Jesus Christ that has brought the people of Our Savior’s through the storms of life, and their love for their neighbors in the community of McCook. The people celebrated their joys and hope for the future of the church in the years to come.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). One of the core values of the ELCA is that in Jesus Christ, all of life – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. ELCA Lutherans tend to be the quiet people in the community doing the small things with a Christ-like heart, not wanting to draw attention to themselves, but hoping that others will see only God in and through Jesus Christ. (find out more about the ELCA at elca.org)

Join us for Sunday worship at 10:15 a.m. with the 10th Pastor called to Our Savior’s, The Rev. Lisa M. Mensinger.
