McCook senior Grant Cappel was moving along to join junior teammate Josiah Wilkinson as Top 10 finishers in Thursday’s Bison Cross Country Invitational at Heritage Hills. Yet after conquering the final hill on this 5,000-meter challenge, Cappel noticed one runner who had fallen along “the home stretch” to that finish line. Temperatures had climbed above 80 degrees when this race concluded just before 6 p.m. Cappel didn’t hesitate to stop and help Perkins County freshman Elijah Goodell.

Together, they completed those final strides with Goodell achiving a well-earned medal in 14th place overall. Though he sacrificed a few spots, Cappel fittingly placed 15th to win the final Bison Invitational varsity medal.

He also received the meet’s “Sportsmanship Award” during medal presentations. “A good sport, to stacrifice himself and help that young man across the finish line,” McCook coach Tom Sughroue said. “We had to give Grant a shout-out. He showed a lot of sportsmanship there.”
