McCOOK, Neb. – Mary Kathleen (Kathy) Schaaf, 86, passed away Thursday (May 4, 2023,) after a short stay at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was born May 6, 1936, in Chicago, Ill., to Herbert D. Drain and Josephine Louise Crim. She married Donald Alan Schaaf in Chicago on May 30, 1959. They moved to McCook in 1971.

Kathy was employed at the McCook Public Library as the children’s librarian for 25 years, retiring in 1998. During her retirement, she cataloged all the books in the Carnegie Library and was given a lifetime membership to the High Plains Historical Society.

She loved to garden, read and spend time with family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Schaaf, in 2020; her parents; two sisters, Pat Gregg and Bettie Moldt; three brothers, Bill, Mike and Tom Drain; brothers-in-law, Steve Schaaf and Bob Miller; and sister-in-law, Theresa Voelkel Marsh.

Kathy is survived by two daughters, Lorraine Sughroue of McCook and Lisa (John) Lee of Loveland, Colo.; two sisters, Sharon Schuler of Madison, Wis., and Shelly Fisher of Long Beach, Calif.; sister-in-law, Monica Miller of Salem, Ore.; six grandchildren, Naomi (Pete) Johnson of Chadron, Neb., Jessa Sughroue of Papillion, Neb., Molly Sughroue of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Trent Frederick of Benkelman, Neb., Noaa Frederick of Globe, Ariz., and Darby Frederick of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many other family members.

Kathy requested no services. She will be buried with her husband at Calvary Cemetery. A private graveside service is being planned for a later date.
