Bison freshman knocks out Haymaker, earns state medal

OMAHA, Neb. — McCook freshman Tristan Campbell avenged earlier defeats and pinned Cozad 40-win powerhouse Dreu White to move into Class B state wrestling medal rounds Friday night.

B-4 district champ Campbell suffered a Thursday quarterfinal pin at CHI Health Center, but rallied for two impressive pins Friday with neither match going 35 seconds into period two.

Campbell continues into Saturday's 145-pound consolation semifinals where he'll take on Bennington senior AJ Parrish (19-5) during the morning hours. A win would move T.C. into the third-place match vs. Waverley's Kemper Reed (48-7) for a rematch of last weekend's B-4 title match or familiar Lexington foe Cesar Cano (36-12).

A loss means Campbell would wrestle for fifth place against one of those same two wrestlers.

Meanwhile, senior Alex Anthony fell one win short from his third Class B state medal. He won an overtime match over Ashland-Greenwood's Trenton Tweton, 4-2, only to lose a heartbreaking 1-0 decision vs. Chadron's Rhett Cullers (36-7).

Anthony (22-7 final record) still reached the Class B state mats all four Bison seasons.

Sophomore Quentin Terry finished his first state tourney on Friday, so McCook fans can focus their cheers for Campbell and Bison girls' state finalist Ambie Custard.
