Zalia Arlene Sass

Sept. 8, 1935 - Jan. 29, 2023

ELWOOD, Neb. — Zalia Arlene Sass, 87, formerly of Stockville, Neb., died Jan. 29, 2023, at the Elwood Care Center.

She was born on Sept. 8, 1935, to Ted and Christina (Herman) Current, in Stockville. She graduated from Stockville High School in 1953 and married Norman Herrick a short time later. They had three children, Theodore J, Steven Eugene, and Zalia Mae. They were divorced in 1963.

Arlene started working for the Frontier County Assessor’s office in 1974 and became the county assessor in 1980. She retired in 2005. She married Arthur Sass in 1978.

Arlene loved horses, her kids and grandchildren, the rest of her family, her many friends, Johnny Cash, gardening, cats (animals in general) and watching Husker football.

She was preceded in death by all three of her children; her husband, Arthur; both of her parents; her sister, Elaine Current; and granddaughter, Katie Jo Herrick.

She is survived by her brother, Leonard (Diane) Current of Hershey, Neb., and their son, Wylie, also of Hershey; sister-in-law, Freda (Darryl) Hosick of Stockville and their children, Brandi (Doug) Helmer (their children, Dawson, Davin and Kinley), Clint (April) Hosick (their children, Matt and Hannah Jo), Colt (Sheila) Hosick, and Canyon Hosick, all of McCook, Neb.; brother-in-law, Bill Sass of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister-in-law, Nancy (Dennis) Corrick (and family) of Covallis, Ore.; daughter-in-law, Connie (Theodore J) Herrick of Fort Lupton, Colo.;, grandchildren, Christopher J Herrick (children, Savannah and Coleton) of Seale, Ala., Teresa Herrick (children, Maddax and Katie) and fiancé, Todd Clark (who she said she adopted as her grandson) of Fort Lupton and Terence (Katie) Herrick (children, Reagan, Liam, Kaeden, and Waylon) of Gretna, Neb.

Arlene had a very tough life and endured many heartaches, but she was always in good spirits regardless of what was thrown at her. Her resilience was noticed by all who came in contact with her. We miss and love her dearly, but we rejoice that she is now with her beloved children, beautiful granddaughter, loving husband, and sister/best friend.

Funeral services are Monday, Feb. 20, 2023, 1 p.m., at the Stockville Congregational Church in Stockville. Internment is at the Arbor Cemetery in Stockville.
