BEATRICE, Neb. — The McCook High boys are starting to hit their mid-season wrestling stride after topping 100 team points at Saturday’s Beatrice Invitational.

Freshman Tristan Campbell crushed the 145-pound challenge with four pins and a strong 11-4 win.

Teammate Quentin Terry continues taking charge of 220-pounders where he delivered three more pins.

McCook excelled even though senior Alex Anthony and junior Canyon Hosick are still dealing with some injuries.

Coach Nick Umscheid offered these insights.

“Our guys performed well on Saturday. Each of our guys faced some new, tough competition from the east side of the state.

Quentin Terry won the 220lbs bracket picking up pins in all of his wins. Quentin is really coming on strong at this point of the season.

Tristan Campbell also won his bracket at 145lbs. He defeated several tough competitors along the way.

He was the number 4 seed in his bracket so all of his victories were definitely earned.

In his finals match, he defeated a wrestler from Lexington by pin which should help his seeding later on in the season at Districts.

We were very pleased with how all of our wrestlers competed and represented the western side of the state at this tournament.”

Freshman Spencer Steinebeck was another top placer, where he pinned three heavyweights before one period was even finished.

Keegan Reece captured two more pins along with fourth place at 182 pounds.

Girls recap

NORTON, Kan. — New McCook Bison wrestler Ambie Custard made an awesome season debut with her 125-pound title at Friday’s J.R. Durham Invitational.

Custard was a top wrestler for the Southwest Roughriders last season before transferring to McCook.

She’d been missing so far this season because of injuries, but finally the “green light” was very bright on her season.

“Ambie Custard began her season with a championship, defeating a previously undefeated wrestler from Colby that was a Kansas state runner up last year,” Bison coach Clint Hosick observed.

Junior Makayla Pate powered her way through another 170-pound challenge with three pins.

Though freshman Peyton Cock (7-1) took her first high school defeat, she still scored two more impressive pins needing just 90 seconds total.

Other Bison stepped up for wins including Chayse Johnson and Aubrey Seybold, who both own 10 or more this season.

“We’re building depth,” Hosick said.
