McCOOK, Neb. — The Stars were standing tall but finding some feisty McCook girls nipping and pushing them all through Friday’s basketball game.

In fact, the Bison (3-4 record) took several early leads over 4-1 Kearney Catholic.

Sophomore Brooklyn Gillen hit an early go-ahead jumper.

Senior Tori Honn was cleaning the glass for several offensive rebounds and senior Shawna Wilkinson’s three-pointer made it 17-10.

“Tori did an awesome job against a girl who was probably six inches taller than her,” Bison coach Amy Scheil said. “We put (coach David) Peterman in the middle, but he couldn’t match what we faced with height tonight.”

The Bison still led through three quarters before Kearney Catholic finally rallied to win 37-33.

“We missed a lot of free throws,” Scheil added. “If we would have got about 10 pints up, it might have gotten into their (the Stars’) heads.”

The Bison still had two great shots to regain late lead of 33-32.

Yet both bounced out and KC 5’3” guard Lexi Keim banked in a decisive three to make it 35-31.

“ I really do think she should have to call bank on that,” Scheil said. “But we didn’t get a hand in her face.”

The Bison played good defense overall though some steals which turned into turnovers also proved costly.

“We have to work on jump stops and not giving the ball back. We’ll work on that during Christmas break,” the coach concluded.

Settling the Dusters

HOLDREGE, Neb. — Now this is the way to finish a busy year as McCook High’s girls dominated Holdrege, 43-29, Saturday evening.

The final score was nowhere near that close.

McCook built a 32-9 halftime lead after jumping in front 14-3 through one quarter.

Senior Shawna Wilkinson scored seven of her 21 points in the second quarter.

Baskets from sophomore Brooklyn Gillen and senior Tori Rippen soon made it 30-9.

The margin grew to 41-19 with sophomore Malia Hilker making her only three-point attempt.

The Dusters tallied those final seven points which made this final score more respectable.
