Returning Bison state runner-up dominates season debut

STAPLETON, Neb. — McCook returning state finalist Makayla Pate made a magnificent season debut and freshman Peyton Cock joined her as Stapleton Invitational wrestlinch champions.

Cock’s now 9-0 in high school wrestling as she knocked off a returning state qualifier to win the 115-pound title.

Pate pinned three foes before taking a 10-3 win that decided the 170-pound class.

Overall, McCook’s placed third among 16 teams competing. Coach Clint Hosick provided some other insights.

“Paige Witt, Chayse Johnson and Aubrie Seybold all wrestled well to finish in fourth place,” he remarked. “Noleigh Stephens wrestled her first tournament and is going to be a good wrestler for us. Meka Daub got a win and is learning each time on the mat.”

Top five teams among 16: 1. Minden 135.5, 2. North Platte 108, 3. McCook 78, 4. Ainsworth 77, 5. Sandhills Valley 70.

170 pounds: Makayla Pate (4-0 season record) won the championship while scoring 22 points. She pinned K. Allen, Arcadia-Loup City, in 2:00; pinned A. Miller, Garden County, in 4:12; pinned T. Petty, MIND, in 4:37; and won 10-3 over J. Ambriz, Ansley-Litchfield.

115: Peyton Cock (9-0) won the championship and scored 28 points. She pinned K. Martin, A-LC, in :31; pinned J. Bourgeois, NP, in 2:21; pinned J. Biel, Ogallala, in 2:22; pinned S. Sowles, MIND, in 5:59.

100: Paige Witt (4-6) placed fourth and scored 11 points. She pinned J. Harder, NP, in :20 and won by medical forfeit over A. Hernandez, Sidney.

105: Chayse Johnson (5-4) placed fourth and scored nine points. She pinned R. LeMunyan, AINS, in :01; won 8-6 0ver H. Webber, Ogallala.

130: Aubrie Seybold (4-4) placed fourth and scored seven points.

170: Meka Daub (2-7) placed fourth.
