COVID numbers decline; officials urge preparation for next wave

McCOOK, Neb. — Only two cases of COVID-19 were reported last week and 12 over the past four weeks, but now is a good time to prepare for the next wave that might be on the way, according to Southwest Nebraska Health Department officials.

One more death was reported in the 9-county SWNPHD district, bringing the total to 110.

“The low numbers of positive COVID tests are a welcome change for us at SWNPHD and for the hospitals and clinics in our area,” said Myra Stoney, SWNPHD health director.

“We encourage residents to be ready for the next wave that may come by having home test kits on hand and getting booster doses of their COVID shots.” The health department has free home test kits available, she said.

So far, 42% of all SWNPHD residents are fully vaccinated, and about 485 of those who are fully vaccinated have received their booster dose of vaccine.

SWNPHD recommends a first booster for all residents aged 12 and over, and a second optional booster for residents 50 and over. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have questions about whether to get a COVID-19 vaccine booster or call 308-345-4223 to talk to a public health nurse.
