Bison girls blast to big home-opening dual win

McCOOK, Neb. — McCook’s first home tennis dual of 2022 had everything from bulldogs eyeing poodles to free sloppy joes to meatballs hit a little beyond the boundaries of success.
Yet through it all, the host Bison girls really were cookin’ as they scored an 8-1 dual win over North Platte.
McCook swept all six varsity matches with only one match closer than 8-4.

Senior Joslyn Hammond faced a variety of speed changes from exchange student Jette Mueller in their No. 1 singles match.
Mueller even took a 6-5 lead, but Hammond finished strong with three consecutive wins for the 8-6 final.
“We had two quality wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles,” McCook coach Matt Wiemers said, referring to junior Jaci Meyers conquering her No. 2 singles varsity debut, 8-4. “I thought our girls were the better athletes in both matches. We were able to hit the shots they needed to in order to come out with wins.”
Wiemers also praised his two new varsity doubles teams since the Bison are replacing five of six varsity players from last year’s Class B top four team.
Junior Abbie Johnson and freshman Izzy Clause made a quick, effective No. 1 combo in their 8-4 victory.
Meanwhile, senior Carley Peters and junior Carsyn Craig played one marathon No. 2 doubles match which North Platte won 9-8 (10-8).
“It was a frustrating loss in the fact that they had too many unforced errors but I commend them for but never giving up even at the end,” Wiemers observed. “This will be a great learning experience for them.
“We saw what we do well and areas we need to work on,” he added about his team. “It’s always good to win at home especially on senior night and I’m proud of the way the girls competed.”
