McCOOK, Neb. — McCook Community College sophomore Emily Barr has signed her letter of intent to continue playing volleyball at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Barr, a Hershey High School graduate, has appeared in all 24 matches this season as an outside hitter. She has 106 kills, 65 digs, 37 total blocks and leads the team with 28 serving aces.

“I was able to visit William Penn and met a lot of people. Members of the team were really nice and I really enjoyed the coach (Aleesha Cleaver) who reminded me of my high school coach (Amy Beyer) and coach Kobza.”

The coaching bonds between MCC coach Hayley Kobza, Emily, and Coach Beyer are strong.

Like Emily, Kobza is a Hershey graduate and played for Coach Beyer who was at the helm of Lady Panther volleyball for more than 30 years.

The coach said she thinks of Emily as a younger version of herself.

“We are the same person with the same mentality and attitude,” Kobza said. “There was one practice where she was imitating me and it was so spot-on that none of us could stop laughing.

Emily said while she has enjoyed her time at MCC on and off the volleyball court, she doesn’t have just one memory.

“Every day, every game is a really good memory,” she said. “MCC has been a big part of my life and always will be. It was home.”

Emily is very interested in wildlife conservation but will pursue a degree in exercise science at William Penn.

“I’m super excited for her, she’s a hard worker and she’s going to do big things at William Penn,” Kobza said.
