HASTINGS, Neb. — It has to be super when words like slobber and knocker are used to describe a wrestling dual.

Sure enough, McCook coach Nick Umscheid used these two words to describe a thrilling 42-39 dual with Class B No. 1 Hastings Thursday night.

“The momentum swung back and forth in the dual with both sides throwing big punches at each other throughout,” Umscheid remarked. “It was a slobberknocker of a dual. It was good to see some of our younger wrestlers start to step up and pick up some wins on the varsity level and make our team that much better.”

Sophomore Wyatt Meyers followed his first varsity win last week with another pin of Hastings’ Trey Clark at 132 pounds Thursday.

Freshman Cadde Beeby continues to be a dangerous Bison “rookie”, blasting though Tiger Jaden Meyer by a 9-2 final score at 113.

Even better was Bison Layton Carpenter pinning Tiger Conner Wademan just 1:28 into their 182-pound match.

Carpenter captured his first varsity win against one of these top-ranked Tiger team members.

“Layton has been working hard all season and it is good to see that hard work to start to pay off for him,” the coach commented.

However, McCook’s “best win” of this dual had to be senior Reid Steinbeck sticking heavyweight foe Blake Davis while needing just 54 seconds.

Davis entered the evening ranked No. 3 among all Class B 220-pounders, but was bumped to 285 instead of wrestling Bison two-time state medalist Alec Langan.

“Reid Steinbeck at heavyweight made the Tigers pay for that decision,” Umscheid confirmed. “He went out on the mat and took care of business quickly pinning his opponent in the first minute of the first period. It was a great way to finish the dual with our team cheering Reid onto victory.”

Langan and senior Talyn Campbell (120) earned four wins while Hastings gained six points without wrestling at 106.

The Tigers needed those to avoid an upset against that unranked Bison team.
