Cattle Trail consos: Falcons, Wolves both go 2-1 for tourney

McCOOK, Neb. — Recaps from the Cattle Trail boys’ tournament consolation finals on Saturday:

Third place

Hitchcock 51,

Arapahoe 30

The Hitchcock County Falcons (3-1 record) zoomed to a 19-1 lead through one quarter of this consolation final Saturday afternoon.

Arapahoe (2-2) doubled its first-half point total with 16 during the third period but still trailed 39-24.

Senior Cord Frink’s five three-pointers in 10 attempts were the Warrior highlight.

Frink finished with 15 points. No Hitchcock individual stats were obtained.

Fifth place

M-HC 53,

Wauneta-Pal. 32

Maywood-Hayes Center’s fine start continued with a 48-20 rebounding advantage.

Junior Weston Morrow took down 12 boards while scoring 11 points and dishing out five assists.

Sophomore Kyler Cox was doubly terrific (13 points/11 rebounds) and freshman Haydyn Farr muscled in to 11 more rebounds.

Farr added eight points on four of seven shots for the 3-2 Wolves.

Sophomore Jhett Sellers also sent eight points through the nets.

Senior Braxton McKinney and junior Garrett Hanna’s eight points each paced 1-4 Wauneta-Palisade.

Sophomore Kyle Jutten followed with five points.

Seventh place

Decatur Comm. 47,

Southwest 42

Tied 26-26 at half, Decatur Community (Kan.) broke free to give former McCook Community College coach Kellen Fernetti his first Red Devils victory.

No Decatur stats were obtained.

Southwest (0-5) senior Justin Brush muscled to a strong 15-point/seven-rebound performance.

Sophomore Kaiden Ruggles reached 11 points and classmate Hunter Cunningham hit four of four free throws.

Friday’s consos

Wauneta-Pal. 54,

Southwest 43

A 22-7 second quarter turned this contest along with junior Grant Walker’s 19 points and senior Braxton McKinney’s 17.

Junior Garrett Hanna netted another 11 points.

Sophomore Hunter Cunningham countered with 18 points, hitting four of five for an awesome 80 percent from beyond the arc.

M-HC 75,

Decatur Comm. 32

The highest point total all tournament featured Weston Morrow’s 27 points on superb 11 of 14 field goals and freshman Hayden Farr shooting six for seven (12 points).

The Wolves were 58 percent overall from two-point range (30 of 52).

Junior Josh Patel added 12 points and seven rebounds. Leading 15 -14, the Wolves unleashed back-to-back 24-point quarters.
