GERING, Neb. — McCook built a 27-0 advantage in just the first quarter and led 41-0 by halftime of a 54-6 varsity football win over the Gering Bulldogs Friday evening.

The 4-2 Bison's biggest victory margin this season featured seven Bison scoring touchdowns including two from sophomore Lucas Gomez-Wilson.

Senior Luke Maris went 13 yards for the opening TD before quarterback Mark Arp found Gomez-Wilson on a 46-yard scoring strike.

Arp ran 22 yards to McCook's 20-0 lead before Mason Schmoker made a wicked move and left another Bulldog behind.

Schmoker's 67-yard pass catch-and-run put the Bison into their 27-0 lead through only 12 minutes.

Senior Alec Langanand Gomez-Wilson both ran to six more points each while Maris made his sixth of seven PAT kicks for that 41-0 halftime margin.

Despite a second-half running clock, the Bison found time to add one more touchdown during those final two quarters. Junior Ethan Spencer's 30-yard fumble return capped the third period.

Following 0-7 Gering's only score, senior Dylan Paschall pounded through three yards to the final Bison TD.

Coach Jeff Gross told Bison radio announcers he was more pleased than after a 42-0 win over Lexington two weeks earlier.

"We knew we were going to win this game, but we wanted to have fun and came out clicking on all cylinders," he said. "Mark made some really strong steps in throwing the ball, Alec Langan ran the ball like Langan always run and even our second (string) guys did some nice. Plus Mason Schmoker had the first touchdown of his career going back to fifth grade of McCook Football League."

The Bison also did not allow Gering a FIRST DOWN until deep into quarter three.

McCook (4-2) moves on to its final regular-season game against Scottsbluff next week. Watch for more details about this latest win in Tuesday's McCook Gazette.
