McCOOK, Neb. — The Heritage Days Road Race should have been the seventh event as part of the 2020 Republican River Fitness Series.

Instead, the Heritage Days 5K road race on Saturday, Sept. 26 will be the first event of the year.

The race will look similar to years past.

Race-day registration and packet pickup will start in the dark in the Norris Park bandshell at 6:45 a.m.

So that everyone can finish before the parade starts, the race will take off at 7:30 a.m. on East First between G and H Streets.

And the official starter will be McCook cross country coach Tom Sughroue with McCook High School cross country team members volunteering along the course.

But there will be a few changes to the road race.

Organizers will be using guidelines from the Southwest Nebraska Health Department’s COVID-19 Event and Gathering Safety Plan to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

This means participants and spectators are asked to wear a mask until the race starts and immediately after they finish.

Temperatures of runners and walkers will be taken upon arrival at Norris Park.

And there will not be an awards ceremony following the road race.

Participants will just have to take their bananas and granola bars and head to other Heritage Days activities.

But all runners and walkers will receive participation and age-group points for the series, despite no medals at the event.

While registration remains open up until a few minutes before the race starts on Sept. 26, anyone who would like to have a t-shirt on race day needs to register by 5 p.m. on Monday. S

Shirts will still be available through race day but may not be available at the race.

Registration is available online at www.republicanriverfitnessseries.com.

Paper forms are not available at this time, but send an email to rondagraff@gmail.com for more information.
