Why were the disc golf baskets removed?

Friday, June 12, 2020

Dear Editor,

I have two questions for the city manager and City Council;

1. Why was the baskets removed from the Kelley Park Disc golf course? For the pandemic? I was told by a city worker it is because (though they didn’t agree) they are afraid too many hands touch the baskets. Really? A lot more hands reach into a hole to retrieve a golf ball, but they didn’t shut down the golf course.

Maybe they figured since it costs money to play golf the richer people are more apt to be germ free, or wash their hands more often than those of us who play disc golf. What really confuses me is McCook is the only disc golf course in at least 100 miles or more to pull the baskets so we can’t play. We have played Cambridge, Arapahoe and even Kearney. We have checked various other courses online in Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska, and none of those we checked pulled the baskets, which brings me back to the original question. 2. When are the baskets going to be put back???? Our family gathered at Cottonmill park this weekend.

We took our discs just in case. Cottonmill did NOT pull their baskets. In fact they installed new ones. Way to go Kearney. I wonder what they did with the old ones. My son in law says we could put them on his place where the city has no jurisdiction. Hmmm?

I guess on the plus side by McCook pulling their baskets we have played Cambridge, Arapahoe, North Platte, Kearney and others just so we could get some exercise and play. And you know what, there were others playing there with 48 county vehicles. What does that tell you McCook. It tells me that those of us who like the sport will travel to other cities where their leaders did NOT see the need to stop the sport and we gladly spent our money on refreshments afterwards in the cities that allowed the sport to continue.

Sincerely,

Marty Guthrie

McCook, Neb.

  • I could have sworn I was told the golf course raised the cups on the greens so that the ball did not go in the hole. Just had to hit it. Don't know if that is still the case?
