Despite virus precautions, courthouse still in business

McCOOK, Neb. — Due to concerns related to the coronavirus and COVID-19 pandemic, the Red Willow County Courthouse in McCook is closed to the public until further notice.

Even though the courthouse is closed to walk-in services, office staff members are still there to serve the public. Red Willow County officials encourage citizens to use the online services available or mail to conduct business.

The county court, assessor’s and treasurer’s offices have issued these statements:

Please call prior to scheduled court times as changes may have been made. Clerk magistrate Gretchen Wiebe said they will instruct a caller if his/her hearing will be held as scheduled or continued.

Payments for tickets, time payment agreements and civil payments may be made at https://www.nebraska.gov/apps-courts-epayments/public/index, or mailed to the court at Red Willow County Court, P.O. Box 199, McCook, NE 69001.

Call the county court office, (308) 345-1904, with all other inquiries, including civil, probate, adoption and small claims cases.

RED WILLOW COUNTY ASSESSOR

-- The Red Willow County Assessor’s office is taking personal property returns until May 1, 2020.

Assessor Kristi Korell said her office mailed out the returns in January and if there are no changes, they can be signed and mailed, or emailed to her office (see addresses below).

She added, “You will also need to send in depreciation worksheets for verification. We will mail you a copy of the return for your records and return your depreciation worksheet.” She continued, if the worksheet will not be completed before May 1, 2020, you may send us a list of the items you purchased in 2019 and the cost, we will add them to your return and send a copy for your signature. If you no longer have an item that is listed on the return, please mark through the item and we will remove it. Please be sure to include a phone number where we can reach you if we have any questions.

-- We are also currently taking applications for Homestead Exemptions. If you received the homestead exemption last year, a 2020 form was mailed to you in February. If you have your exemption application and income form completed, you may answer the questions, sign the application (Form 458) and the Nebraska Schedule I – Income Statement, then mail or email them to our office. If you need help completing the form ,there is still plenty of time. The forms are not due until June 30, 2020. If we have not received your application prior to the deadline we will contact you.

RED WILLOW COUNTY TREASURER

The Red Willow County treasurer’s office is closed to the public except by appointment only for new vehicles.

All motor vehicle renewals can be done online or through the mail.

Most driver’s licenses can be renewed online.

Real estate and personal property tax payments can be done online or through the mail.

You will have to mail in the occupation tax payment, or we can take payment over the

phone for these or for any tax payment.
