TRENTON, Neb. — March-like madness arrived with a fury in Hitchcock County Friday night.

A packed gym of faithful roared throughout the RPAC West boys title game between Dundy County-Stratton and Paxton.

The four quarters almost matched their identical 15-2 season records.

Both teams took leads, blocked shots, fought through defenders and lifted fans to their feet.

“It was one of the greatest games since I’ve been here,” DC-S coach Kris Freeland proclaimed.

Top scorers Michael Fredrick of DC-S matched 6’10” Paxton Tiger Blake Brewster with 24 points apiece.

Yet it was DC-S teammates like freshman Corbin Horner, sophomore Nolan Burrell and soph Quade Myers who helped decide this instant classic.

Horner hit four of six shots for nine clutch points including a late runner just over one Paxton Tiger’s fingertips.

Burrell buried one huge late free throw, then hit two to decide Saturday’s title game with Southern Valley mentioned in Monday’s Gazette.

Meanwhile, speedy quarterback Myers chased the final Paxton Tiger who had a chance to unleash their game-tying shot.

He never released it, because the ball bounced loose as those final seconds expired.

A roaring celebration signaled the 54-51 DC-S victory — ending what was Paxton’s 14-game win streak.
