McCOOK, Neb. — A “Christmas miracle” of sorts occurred at the McCook Humane Society.

Thanks to a donor who wishes to stay anonymous, spay and neuter fees have been paid for all of the cats and dogs at the shelter, as well as for all the vaccinations and micro-chipping of animals.

The shelter will continue to spay or neuter new animals brought to the shelter, until all of the funds are depleted.

This is wonderful news for the animals, the shelter and prospective owners, said Lorie Prestes, McCook Humane Society director. Before the donation, new owners were given a voucher for reduced spaying/neutering rates at local veterinary clinics.

The donor had been looking to do something for some time and seeing the shelter full of animals, offered to pay for spaying and neutering, Prestes said.

It couldn’t have come at a better time as the shelter is on “feline overload,” she said. Currently there are 60 cats of all ages and colors, with some being there since May.

Now, they’re all vaccinated, micro-chipped and spayed/neutered.

So if you’re thinking of adopting a pet, now is the time to do it, Prestes said. Adoption fees for spayed/neutered cats are $46.75 (after tax) and dogs are $73.50 total (after tax).
