LEXINGTON, Neb. — McCook’s flawless 10-0 singles performance powered the Bison JV tennis girls into a tie for first place at Thursday’s Lexington Invitational.

The Bison tallied 54 points to catch Kearney Catholic and outscore four other teams competing in this tourney.

Freshman Elsa Wilcox went Serena Williams on the No. 2 singles field where she went 5-0 with no match closer than 8-3.

She swept both North Platte and Holdrege 8-0 while scoring 8-1 wins over two other foes (Lexington, Ogallala).

“Elsa played lights out all day,” coach Matt Wiemers confirmed. “Her serving was effective and her ball placement kept opponents on defense most of the day.”

Wilcox’s record was 40-5 while No. 1 Macy Hill also dropped just five games to four opponents.

However, Hill showed Bison tenacity when she fell behind 6-3 to Kearney Catholic’s No. 1.

No problem.

Hill promptly won five of the final six games for her 9-7 title-clinching victory.

“Macy showed great poise and determination,” Wiemers explained. “She has played some excellent tennis the last couple of weeks.”

The Bison doubles teams both delivered 4-1 records, only dropping super-tight decisions to those K.C. Stars.

Emily Kjendal and Emily Laurie won an 8-6 battle with Ogallala at No. 1 doubles besides three other strong wins.

Kristin Collicott and MaKenna Cooper captured second place at No. 2 doubles. They only lost five games outside of a 9-7 thriller vs. the Stars.

Watch for tennis coverage all season.
