Indians golf to rain-shortened tourney title

LAMAR, Colo. – The McCook Community College men’s golf team had another strong day Friday amid difficult conditions to win the first Region IX tournament of the spring.

After compiling an eight-shot lead in the opening round Thursday, the Indians put five more shots on the field to best Eastern Wyoming by 13 shots.

On Friday, MCC shot a 144 and the team claimed the top three individual scores as well.

“Congratulations to these guys for their first team victory of the season,” MCC Coach Tyler Loop. “It was cut down to nine holes today due to the weather but they were on pace for a great round again.”

MCC shot a two-day total of 436 to best Eastern Wyoming’s 449. Northeastern Junior College was third, 49 shots back, Otero Junior Collee was 55 shots back in fourth, Central Wyoming was fifth, 57 shots back and Lamar sixth, 85 shots behind MCC.

Sophomore Cameron Lampe (Windsor, Colo), shot a 36 on Friday to tie with his teammate for individual honors. The topped the leaderboard with a two-day 108.

Sophomore Graham Gaspard (Breckenridge, Colo.) tied Eastern Wyoming’s George Elliott and NJC’s Brett Mattson, for the low round of the day – all shooting 35s, to propel Gaspard into a third-place tie for the tournament with Eastern Wyoming’s Harry Walch.

Sophomore Ronnie Quick (London, England) shot a 36 on Friday to finish in seventh place with a two-day total of 111.Freshman KC Carlson (Delta, Colo.) shot a 37 Friday for a two-day 116.

Freshman Trevor Oberg (McCook) a 38 on Friday and finished with a 120.

Brady Wonderly (Benkelman) shot a 46 on Friday for a two-day total of 135.
