INDIANOLA, Neb. - Old-time harvesting and farming methods will be on display Sunday in conjunction with the annual Indianola Old Settler’s celebration. The event is just 4 miles south of Indianola, and begins at noon.

The Bum Malleck show is much more than a threshing. This year’s events will include a saw mill, shingle making, corn shelling with mule power, stationary baling, horse-powered grain elevator, and other early 1900’s farm machines. Bum Malleck’s son, Griff, chairman of the annual event, said, “We think our show is somewhat unique in that we don’t just display the equipment. We have live demonstrations of most of the machines, and they actually do work. In addition to approximately 6 to 8 teams of horses and mules all working in harness, we will have a large display of working antique tractors, approximately 50 stationary engines, and at least one steam-powered tractor all belted to various pieces of machinery.”

At last year’s show, hundreds of spectators enjoyed all the demonstrations including perhaps the largest collection of 1920’s era Rumley oil pull tractors in Nebraska. Tractors on display include the largest Rumley tractor ever made with wheels almost 7 feet high. New demonstrations this year include an original wooden threshing machine that has been stored inside for decades, and a broom maker crafting brooms out of straw.

This year’s event will also feature the Wanda Malleck Memorial Quilt show and self-guided tours of the refurbished 1920’s era horse and mule barn and a one-room school house complete with the original desks.

The event is open to the public with no admission charge. Show prep begins after the Old Settlers Parade on Saturday, and the show begins at Noon on Sunday, August 12. There will be food and shade available on site.

This year’s show is sponsored by Red Willow Aviation, Red Willow Chemical, and the Janssen Auto Group. For additional information, call (308)340-1294 or (308)340-6232.
